My husband has been on high doses of prednisone on and off for about 5 years. Right now he is on 60 mg a day. He is having the. Jpouch surgery next week so hopefully he can get off this stuff soon. He wants to know if anyone else has been on extreme high doses and had the surgery and how long if ever did body and skin return to normal. He has really bad stretch marks and his skin is real thin in certain areas like under his armpit. Has anyone else experienced this and did it go away?

I was on high doses of Prednisone, on and off for 20 years (1972-1992) and 60 mg at the end before surgery. I was gradually weaned off in the month after surgery. I actually got Prednisone by IV during surgery. I went through some mild withdrawal symptoms. These included headaches, mostly of the dull variety but constant for a month or so. After takedown my complete health was gradually restored with no Prednisone.

Flash forward to 2011. 19 years past my last dosing of Predisone. I had a bone density scan ordered and they found some very mild osteopenia in my left (non-dominant) forearm. Nothing major, but my Doc said it was likely due to Prednisone use 1972-1992 and not due to vitamin D or calcium deficiency, although I was put on supplements for both.

I suspect your Husband will be okay. I probably took more Prednisone over the course of years, than he did. But 60 mg is a high dosage and he needs to be off it, but gradually.

By the ways, the main skin problem I had was acne, and moonface from the Prednisone. Both became less of a problem or went away. I still get acne very occasionally on chest and back, coinciding with my pouchitis flares.

Wish him luck for me.
The worse thing I have experienced from the high dose of steroids is that my adrenal glands have not woken up yet and it's been almost 4 months since my takedown. My body no longer produces the natural amount of steroid that it's supposed to due to my high dose of steroid use for my UC. I have to take oral steroids every day and wear a medic alert bracelet so I don't go into adrenal crisis. Hoping that the glands wake up some day....
I finally got a well needed facial this past weekend. Since the last facial I'd been on a few rounds of high doses of prednisone. Without the tech knowing this she said to me that my skin was really thin. I'm assuming thats a result of prednisone use. I honestly don't know if skin thinning can be reversed? Also I don't think stretch marks can either. They may fade a bit over time. Acne, moon face, hair growing in unwanted places, sleepless nights, these will all improve and go away as he tapers down. So many of us went into surgery on prednisone. I was switched over to IV steroids right before surgery and stayed on them throughout my hospital stay. I was put back on oral once I was discharged. It took a month after surgery to taper off. Good luck to your husband
I was on high doeses of prednisione for years and years on and off (more on than off tho). 60mg as well. From about age 8 to 18. Pills daily, and for a while I had a PICC line at home and it was being given IV. This was in my young years when I was developing. I was also getting it IV in the many many visits long term to the hospital.

I'm happy to say, as it seems, I have had no long term effects from it. Im 30 now. I frequent the gym, I do some crazy strength trianing when I'm feeling froggy, do warrior dashes and other obstacle marathon races, have seen not one problem with any part of me as a result of long term prednisione use. Bones work great, strong, no organ issues that have presented themselves or joint problems (I can't tell you how thankful I am for that)

During the time I was on it I had horrible side effects. Terrible puffiness and acne that made middle school very difficult for me because the kids were so mean, terrible joint pain, it was rough. I should post a before and after picture, you wouldn't believe how different it made me look.

Hopefully your husband wont have any long term effects either. prednisione is a life saver for many reasons but it's a killer for many others. Good luck!!!
Having some issues right now with prednisone and my eyes. I had
tapered off of prednisone prior to my July 3rd surgery with a really
long, slow taper dropping 1 mg a month for 10 months.

For my 1st sugery they put me back up to 30 mg and I've been
tapering down fast dropping 2 1/2 mg a week. Unfortunately my
eyes seem to be really sensitive to the change and my eye pressures
have spiked way up. Had to have a laser irridectomy on my left eye
last week and have one scheduled for my right eye this week.

My takedown surgery is scheduled for the 28th, hoping like heck
they don't pump me full of prednisone yet again and I have to go
through this all over.
