I am now a month away from having my 3rd surgery the take down!!! Obviously I am very excited. But really nervous. My first surgery was June 28, 2011 and I had to wait until may 17 2012 to have the 2nd bc I needed to wait 6 months bc I was so sick then I had school and was told it was ok to schedule in may. Now on August 16th I have my final. I am nervous. What do I need to expect? What's it like? Is it as bad as the 2nd bc my 2nd was awful I got sick in the hospital 10 days then was readmitted for a wound infection and had to be Connected to a wound pump. (awful bc I wasn't allowed to leave insurance reasons but it worked wonders) I just want to know what to expect what it's like. Will I be ok? I have pretty bad cramping now and then mucous comes out my back end and will it hurt like that? I am 23 going into my last semester as an undergrad (I hope) and just want to start school disease free and most of all healthy!!!! Can anyone help me out?

My surgeron is Dr. Remzi of the clev clinic and he is the BEST surgeon. I would completely recommend him!!!!

It has been better than I imagined. I am only three weeks out from takedown. Start doing rectal exercises now. Imagine squeezing a pebble inside your rectum and then releasing. Kegel exercises to maintain and tone the pelvic floor are also very important. Having these muscles in great shape will increase your bowel control after takedown.I have the usual butt burn stories from the extra acid
in the new system but it is under control now
with Questran. I love having a j-pouch. I was shocked at the lack of pain. There was a little the first two days and then nothing from the surgery. The butt burn was painful but life is already so much better than having UC. I am already back to doing yoga and hiking.
The 3rd one is soooo much easier surgery wise and pain wise at incision site but i did experience ALOT of pain when using my bowels/pouch. I hadn't been to the loo the normal way in just over a year so it took awhile to get use to. The pain wasn't always there only when it was toilet time, this lasted about 1-2wks. Also i would wear a pad to bed at first,i had a couple of accidents overnight during the first week,i guess my body just needed to get use to the new plumbing system Wink It's so worth it though. Now it's all good,no accidents or pain and i've had my pouch 6yrs.
Good luck with it all Smiler
