Hi all,

I'm so happy to have found this group and am really hoping for some advice.  I'm 8 years post colectomy.  Since my surgery, I've been treated for a few flares of pouchitis (presenting with pain and frequency), and many bowel obstructions, but for the past 2 years I have been totally healthy.  Now, for 4 days, I've had leaking at night and frequency and urgency during the day that is totally unlike what I've ever experienced before.  As soon as these symptoms started, I began taking Cipro and Lomotil that I have on hand, but 3 days later, I'm no better, and actually worse.  I feel generally crummy, tired, constantly thirsty but little appetite.  I'm concerned that my lifestyle lately may have triggered this - I just started a new job 10 days ago that involves shift work, long commute, and a lot more hours and responsibility than I had before.  Has anyone had similar experiences?  Do you think pouchitis (or whatever this is) could be from stress or not sleeping regularly? Anything I can try over the next few days while I await seeing my GI doc?  Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm sorry you're feeling so crappy, Bee. Four days is short enough that it could be all kinds of things. My first guess would be a garden-variety GI bug, and it may get better on its own before your appointment. Stay hydrated to avoid the ED, if possible. It would be unusual, I think, for stress and sleep disruption to do what you're describing, but they don't help, of course. If it persists longer than a week or so then other causes start to seem more likely to me (e.g. C. diff). Good luck!
