Hi, 46 year old male, 16 year J-Poucher here. This is a great forum, thank you all. I'm generally healthy and like most, I am usually dehydrated and vitamin deficient.  I tried regular, swallow vitamins but am fairly certain nothing gets absorbed and I get regular "mini-blockage" situations. If I take 3 or 4 vitamins, even with the gelatin casing, I get more severe blockages, but not severe for hospital. Extended release tabs, forget about it - straight into the toilet.

I really want to take supplements, fish oil, ginger, turmeric, mostly. I also really want to take a good men's multi vitamin. Should I go liquid? Chewable? Something I don't know about? I'm wide open to suggestions and experiences. I'm also combing through the forum here, just thought I'd share with you and am hoping to continue learning and living a good J Pouch life! Again, thank you all.

Lou, it’s likely that the dehydration is causing you more problems than anything else. It could be contributing to your blockages as well as any deficiencies you are experiencing. I’d suggest focusing on that until you’ve solved it, whether it requires changes in habits, fluids you consume, or even medications. Chronic dehydration is very, very destructive.

Thank you Scott! You're absolutely right. I'll focus on my hydration. My struggle is, at home - I'm good. During travel, I'm not, because the more H2O I drink, the more unfamiliar toilets I must visit. So, I hardly drink enough, so it sends me into a multi day tail spin. Forget about mowing the lawn or going to the pool with my kids, that drains me within minutes. It's rough, but you're right, that's the core reason for most other issues, especially blockages. I greatly appreciate your response, very nice and very helpful.

I agree with Scott regarding the dehydration but is it actually necessary to take vitamin supplements.

Unless you’re not eating a heathy and balanced diet, there should be no reason why you can’t absorb nutrients; unless there’s an underlying condition.

Due to dehydration, you’re more than likely low in electrolytes and/or potassium; potassium is normally absorbed from our diet but it’s kind of, also an electrolyte which can be replenished by increasing our sodium intake.

The function of the Large Intestine/Colon, is to absorb water and salt from our waste; and as we no longer have a colon but a J pouch, we can’t absorb salt and water like we used to; therefore we have to replenish our salt and water levels, as well as electrolytes by other means.

Thank you Strange. I do eat generally healthy, but well, ya know, not all the time. That said, something I know I need more than water, is reminders - hence why I value this feedback so much. I've found electrolytes in fruit, bananas mostly, but I should probably supplement with some PowerAde or Gatorade or organic apple juice? I'll do my best. Either way, much appreciated! Much, much appreciated.
