Hey Everyone,
I have been without my colon for over two years. Whenever I go to my doctor and get my blood drawn, they always put me on high doses of vitamin D. I also have to take calcium. I was curious as to why I need so much? I am only 15. I know it has something to do with how I do not absorb things because of my not having a colon. So, why do I need these vitamins? What is it preventing? And if you could give me any information about vitamins I need, and why please tell me. Thanks!

They only put you on high doses of vitamin D if your levels are low. It may not even have to do with your surgery, as people with IBD tend to have low D levels as compared to the normal population. They used to think that vitamin D only prevented rickets, but they now know it has properties like a hormone. It still is not fully understood and they are still researching it. You may need long term supplementation.
