I was wondering if anyone with a j-pouch has had problems with VRE's. In case you don't know about it (like me), it stands for "Vancomycin-resistant enterococci" which means:

  • Enterococci are bacteria that commonly live in the bowel and are usually resistant to many antibiotics. ...
  • There are only a few antibiotics that are able to treat VRE infections. ...
  • People can be colonized with VRE, meaning that the bacteria are living harmlessly in the body.

I know this is very personal but I have a problem. I have incontinence with both urine and stool so I have to wear underwear like Depends all the time. Part of my problem is that when I leak some stool it tends to drift upwards. I think that's why I keep getting UTI's and now VRE's. I was wondering if anyone out there has had this problem and what they did about it. I've been sent to an Infectious Disease place. They tried to cath. me but had trouble. Now I have to go back next week to try again. Anyway, has anyone had any problems like this and, if so, how was it resolved or are you still trying to get rid of it? Thanks for your help.
