Hi. I'm using Rowasa enemas for some very mild pouchitis and I have a question about using them. I used them for years when I had UC but this is a whole different story now!

1) How far in do you put the tip? I can't do much before it hurts.

2) Given that I can't put it in too much, a lot leaks out the side and I wind up with a clean up job after. I figure I'm getting about half in, but that's just a guess.

It feels cold going in and I can feel that but then the problem is that I don't feel that it's leaking out so I keep going and can't tell how much actually got in. I know some does because I can see when I go to the bathroom that it's got that Rowasa color to it, if you know what I mean.

Any suggestions? I think that even the little bit that's getting in has made a difference but I'd like to figure out how to made it less of a chore to use and to get the most out of it.

I'm about four months from take down, by the way.

Thanks for any/all help!

You need to insert it fully to get past the sphincters. Use extra lube if you need to, in order make the passage easier. You may need to change the angle of insertion too. But don't force it. You can also try inserting a finger first to dilate a bit.

Another suggestion is to try mesalamine suppositories (Canasa) instead. Same medication, easier to use.

If it is really painful, you may have an anal fissure, and that is your bigger problem.

Thanks, Jan!

I wish I could use Canasa but I'm sensitive to an ingredient in it. I'm actually using Rowasa SF (sulfite free) which I had been able to use when I had UC.

OK, I'll see how I do tonight. I think that I'm going to have to switch to Flagyl anyway. This was my doctor's very kind attempt to help me avoid antibiotics but I don't think it's really doing the trick since I still have a little blood. Too bad because the recent scope showed only a tiny little patch of mild inflammation.

I'm afraid of taking Flagyl and feeling awful but I'm going to have to deal with it and hope it doesn't interfere with my work and appointments. Ugh.
