Hi everyone. I am new to this forum group and was wondering if anyone can offer me some advice. I suffered from collitis for a number of years before I had a Proctocolectomy with ileostomy and bag fitted.

I had that for 3 and half years and have recenlty undergone final pouch surgery to conenct it all back up. This was done on 29th July so 7 weeks ago. I appreciate things are probably still settling down but I need some advice as i am very uncomfortable. My stool movemement during the day seem to be okay 6-8 times depending on what I have eaten. I am however very sore and am suffering wiht irritation and anal itching. Last night I was in a lot of pain and was up for most of the night. I have been recommended to use nappy rash cream (sudocream) which helps but as I am going to the toilet alot doesnt get a chance to heal it. My stools are still very runny and eating differently doesnt change this much. Does anyone know of any medication that will help make it more solid. I am taking around 6-8 imodium a day which helps during day but not at night. I beleive if my stools werent so runny then it woudl be as sore, is this right?

Also if anyone knows of any other creams/ medication I can apply would be good to know?

Thanks alot for your help. I am trying to do my job and am really struggling at the moment as it is so uncomfortable. Consultant doesnt offer much assitance and feel I have been left on my own with this!

For me, certain foods really do help bulk up my stool like bananas, applesauce, rice, bagels, and meat. Some people have luck with taking Metamucil. Also, are you eating a lot of sugar/carbs? Decreasing your sugar intake will help a lot. You can also try Pepto Bismol tablets and see if that provides you some relief. And yes, bulking up the watery stools should help quite a bit with the irritation. There are a lot of creams out there to use. I don't like to deal with all the messy white creams/zinc oxide (even though it is a great barrier). If I ever need something, I will use Aquaphor.
And as often as you have the chance, take sitz baths. You can buy one that fits on the toilet - for example: http://www.amazon.com/Duro-Med...sr=8-3&keywords=sitz. Fill it with water as warm as you can handle and sit for 15, 20 min. several times a day. I don't use the water pouch that's included, I just sit in the water until it's no longer warm. I throw in a handful of epsom salts sometimes, as well.

And - bidets are a huge help, as well, also can be found on Amazon at a variety of prices and bells/whistles.
Hi Simon,

What you can do to ease the situation of irritation is to try watching your diet (avoid wheat) and nuts.

Also, one of the best barrier creams is calmospetine, which can be purchased over the counter I believe at a pharmacy.

In addition, there is a nefedepine based cream(prescription) which is mixed with petroleum jelly (by pharmacist). This is in my opinion the best medicine for the itching and burning. It stops spasms of the sphincter (which cause the discomfort).

Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Hi Simon,
I had to take Imodium 2-3 times a day for the first 6 years after my take down surgery. One thing that I found helpful in reducing irritation is using flushable wipes, making sure the area is as clean as possible every time I go to the bathroom. About 4 months ago I changed my eating habits, I eliminated all excess sugar, non-complex carbs (mainly pasta, bread, and rice), all processed foods, and excess fat. I eat plenty of lean protein, low sugar fruits, and lots of veggies (mostly cooked). The diet change has improved everything drastically, the acidy stool has ceased and I have so much more energy. Plus, I haven't had to take Imodium at all. I do have to be careful with the veggies and some fruits. I, personally, never had much success with the "bulking" foods and Metamucil.
Good luck!
Hi Simon,
My J pouch is 20 years old and I occasionally still suffer from acid, painful runny stool. My stools had been watery all along and recently found that eating 2 Metamucil Wafers daily helps(sometimes I eat 4). My stools get a ribbon-like consistency that does not cause pain or irritation. If I stop eating them for a few days I notice the difference. For some reason, no other form of Metamucil helps. I also find that eating sweet potatoes (baked or microwaved, not fried) bulks me up. Some squashes do as well. As far as creams go...Balmex is very shooting. Applying Johnson and Johnson's Baby Oil Gel or A&D ointment also helps. Make sure to put an extra thick layer before you go to the bathroom so it protects the skin from the stool. The excess product will also help clean the area when you wipe.At times when I'm extra sensative I use Hemorrhoid ointment. Using baby wipes can also help.
Over 8 Imodium a day will do you no good. Adding metamucil 3 times a day will help in the beginning as my surgeon had me do both in the beginning.

Also eat the foods that are more thickening and not roughage like raw fruits and veggies.

Calmoseptine butt cream, baby wipes and cleaning with water are the best. Dab with the softest TP you can find. IHMO it is Charmin Ultra Soft.

Plus it is going to take a lot of time for your pouch to get use to doing it's new job. Time and experience.....sorry I know it's a pain, literally in the butt.
