I have wasted 2 years of my life trying to find a surgeon in the province of Quebec who can perform jpouch reconstruction surgery.

My surgeon, Dr. JF. at the local English hospital claims there are no qualified surgeons and I have to go elsewhere. I was seen by another surgeon on his team (senior) who never mentioned any other surgeon either.

In an act of desperation, I contacted the pediatric surgeon who operated on me in 1984 at the French Children's hospital.

He knows of 4 surgeons in Quebec (in the greater Montreal area where I live) who are definitely qualified for pouch redos and have done it before.

What is even more disturbing is that both surgeons at the English hospital know these surgeons. Two years of my life searching for a doctor without any assistance from the surgeon who is looking after me nor surgeons his department.

Two years have been wasted and I am told the longer I wait (the older I am) the less of a chance I have of success.

There is still at least a 1 year waiting list.

It gets better. A new doctor at the English hospital wants me to do the following tests:

1) a special barium test (however the hospital is out of barium, so can't do it there)
2) a nuclear test where I eat solid food and they follow its progress (however, this test is no longer performed at the hospital, it is done only with liquid)
3) a CT scan - I had scheduled at the hospital last Friday and cancelled because I had no reason for it, now they want one and there is a 6 month waiting list

In addition, the new surgeon at the English hospital was only given my file 10 minutes prior to her seeing me. My surgeon knew she was coming to work there 6 months ago, and she started October 1.

The Colo-rectal department at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal is the worst run facility ever!!!!! Avoid it at all costs!

Pathetic!!!

Patients deserve better.

have you tried connecting with other j-pouchers from Canada on this site or via the CCFA? it might be good to get their inputs and perspectives.

also, do you take anyone with you to your appointments?

when you are in the midst of this suffering, it is very emotional and frustrating, and hard to make effective decisions. we only have so much time and money to continue to expense. the waiting list part does suck for sure, though.
Would it help to go to the hospital where the good surgeons are through the back door Emergency Department? Seriously, if you are in horrible pain, bleeding, anything pouch related that is an emergency as you can't wait 6 months - 2 years.

This could kill you. What if there's a fistula, hole, something leaking into your gut? You could potentially die waiting on those that don't know.

I feel so bad for you, just trying to help you get to a doctor that can operate.
I am jsut in discomfort. Fortunately I am not dieing. I have no fever and my bloods are good.

The continual nausea, back pain and stomach discomfort is not easy to deal with.

The worst part is the lies by my surgeon. He knows them all and could have directed me to a qualified surgeon quite easily. I do not unmderstand why this has been the case, and why a second surgeon in his department has follwed the same pattern. They all know Zane Cohen, and some have even worked with him. Never in the 5 years that I ahve been a patient there has his name come up.
