Trying to conceive, don't know how to get help.

Hi all,
My hub and I have been trying to conceive for 8 months now to no avail. Had a 3 step open j pouch surgery at Cleveland Clinic in 2012 (April, sept, done in dec). Have stayed healthy since, I think 3 bouts of pouchitis all which were cleared by normal antibiotics. I'm 27 and husband is 32. We don't know where to turn. My on/gyn doesn't seem to even know what a jpouch is, let alone understand the risk of infertility associated. When I saw her after 6 months of trying, she said try a year. Do I travel an hour away to Cleveland for a more informed doctor? Keep trying? Help!

I don't know if there's any harm in waiting, but probably what your ob/gyn is thinking that even "normal" people can take up to a year to conceive. They don't usually don't consider you to have an infertility problem until that point. So I could see you going to see a specialist and them telling you the same thing potentially, although of course considering your surgeries your odds of conceiving naturally are much lower - - might be worth going ahead and getting established with a more informed doc. I believe that once you are at higher risk for infertility (pelvic surgery puts you there), the one year wait guide line is shortened to six months or so. This is especially true if you are around 30 years or more. It just wastes time that you could be undergoing testing. I'd see a fertility expert if it were me.

Okay. I will try to proceed then with something. Called my gi doc to see what they thought, or if they can help me explain it to my gyn what a jpouch is. I feel strange trying to educate my doctor with studies and explanations but sometimes it is necessary. Or might be hunting a new doctor.

I think if you go with the pelvic surgery angle, he can "get" that. Rectal dissection is in the area of the reproductive organs.
