Program Overview
Restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is the surgical treatment of choice for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) who require colectomy. The reconstructive nature of RPC and IPAA requires intensive preoperative care, teamwork, and surgical skills and expertise. While the surgery significantly improves patients’ quality of life, adverse sequelae or complications are common. The diagnosis and management of ileal pouch disorders have been challenging. Experts from CUMC/NYP (Drs. Bo Shen, Ravi P. Kiran, and James Church) led the effort to establish the International Ileal Pouch Consortium (IIPC) to meet the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. A series of consensus guidelines entitled “Diagnosis and Classification of Ileal Pouch Disorders”, “Management of Inflammatory Disorders of the Ileal Pouch”, “ Management of Pouch Neoplasia”, and “Management of Structural Complications of the Ileal Pouch” were commissioned for Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Worldwide, approximately leading experts from more than 30 institutions have participated in the preparation of the documents, with the CUMC/NYP investigators as leading authors. It is the time to spread up-to-date knowledge in the documents to regional, national, and international audiences. It will run a full-day Zoom-based conference in September 2022.
