when I had a colostomy bag I got a blockage with sweet potatoes, now have j pouch and wonder if anyone does eat them?

Also my nutritionist once said eating string beans with a j pouch forms a hair ball, like a cat and unable to eat them with a pouch. Has anyone ever heard of this, I have not had string beans for many years.

For me, foods that caused problems with my bag were different than things that caused problems with my pouch and the nutritionist that I worked with had little/no experience with pouches. So, it was kinda trial and error for me.

Starchy foods should thicken your stool, like potatoes. I never had any blockages from them. Just be careful what you eat them with. I love green beans and eat them all the time with no problems at all.

Insoluable fibers are not my friends... celery, apples, orange membranes, etc. I can eat apples if I grate them, celery if it’s cooked, oranges if I take the membrane off the fruit. Mushrooms are pretty much out of the question for me. Also, watch out for lobster and prawns. I love them but never make them for myself or order them when I go out, luckily my hubby will share a bite with me and I get my “fix”.

If you are not sure how you will respond to a food that you haven’t eaten with your pouch try a small amount and pay attention to what you are pairing it with.

Good luck.

Mikeey, most J-pouchers never get a blockage, regardless of what they eat. For those folks, trying to use diet to avoid a blockage is completely unnecessary. If you have been prone to blockages since takedown, though, you may need to chew and choose more carefully, since you may have a frequently (or chronically) narrowed bit of intestine. Your nutritionist really overstated things, but left you with a hard-to-forget visual. If you’re worried about string beans just cut them into shorter pieces and chew them well.

I had sweet potatoes but I do not like it .It gives me gas but it binds too. string beans is good I do not have a problem with it and Kale. I boil them till it gets very soft , that way it helps in digestion. I just had them, they are my favorite..Maybe you should boil your string beans try it...

I see nutritionist and they tol me that I have to take Vit D3
