I Just had my takedown barely 3 weeks back. Overall i am doing good. 6 BM's per day (relatively well formed). No urgency or any such issues, I can eat most stuff. But i have 2 issues (which maybe related)

1. I rarely pass gas

2. For the last 4 days, every 10 minutes once, i have relatively loud gurgling sound in my tummy (feels like gas, but not sure). Worse, it pains (anyone looking at my face can tell). The noise is not crazy loud, but if you are sitting next to me, you can hear.

Any insights into what is causing this and what can be done to fix this. I would like to avoid taking Imodium or Pepto (just out of fear of constipation or any obstruction from that constipation).

Thanks

Hi Gom and welcome.  That sure sounds like gas.  Gas pain can be quite strong.  I find that walking can help release gas,  some people use gentle stretching.  For me the best way is to lie on my right side - for whatever reason that works.

Tell us about your diet,  that may help find the gas producers.

You can also try GasX  (simethicone)  . It does not constipate me.

Hi, thank you so much. I did try some chewable Phazyme which contains Simethicone.

Diet: Full Vegetarian

Breakfast: Bagel with Cream Cheese or Oats or Cream of Wheat or White Bread with Peanut or Almond Butter. Any of these with a cup of Coffee.

Lunch: Rice with some form of lentil soup and some cooked vegetables

Dinner: Pasta or Flour Tortillas or Rice with Veggies or Cheese.

I am trying to gain weight, so i add the below for brunch and evening snack

Banana Ice cream smoothie / Egg / Avacado / Ensure Nutrition Drink / Potato Bites

Well you are eating a pretty varied diet only three weeks out.  At that point I was still living on peanut butter, yogurt and cheerios.

I was vegan when I got ulcerative colitis,  went to vegetarian,  and then after the colectomy I added back white fish and soft cooked poultry.  I feel depleted when I'm not eating enough proteins - I can tell because I start craving sliced turkey.

Perhaps you would try an elimination diet.  Basically that means go on a limited bland diet for a few days, and see if your symptoms are relieved.  Then add back one food at a time and see what happens.

On your food list are a couple that I love & know give me gas.  Lentils, avacado, and coffee. YMMV of course.  Many people get gassy from wheat or eggs, even peanut butter.   Broccoli and cabbage can be hard to eat, compared to steamed zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, butternut squash.

Even with the blandest diet I think j pouchers are more gassy than most.  I was pretty happy when I was able to pass gas with my pants on and not be afraid of an accident...though I've had some overconfident mistakes.

Have you tried prune juice?

I experienced horrible gas pain after my surgery. Gas-x and walking did help. They will tell you to adjust your diet, but I was dairy & carbonation free for years prior to my surgery. For almost two years post-op the only time I could pass gas was when I went to the bathroom, the gas created constant pressure urging me to go to the bathroom sometimes a bit painful. But this past year that has changed and it’s a huge relief. So, you might just need some time for more healing.

Nice to meet you Gom!! I am a vegetarian too!

Yea I would say that the more time that passes it’s just going to get better, after my takedown I was really gassy as well and feeling the contractions rolling through my gut over and over and thinking here we go again to the restroom just for it to be gas. I’m like 2 yrs out now and I still hold my breath if I decide to try and fart standing up hoping it’s dry and not damp after lol. But what’s worked for me is if I’m gassy I lay on my side or stomach and I’m usually able to pass the gas really well and 98% of the time without it messing my under garments up,
