Just wondering if anyone else has experienced horrible acne after long term steroid use. I had surgery 5 years ago and my re-connection surgery 4 years ago and have been off of steroids for about 4 years. I was on 60-90mg for a good 2 years before surgery and at least 25 for 3 years before that. I am 35 and have never had an issue with acne, not even in jr high or high school and about a year ago it started to get bad. It has progressed to numerous cystic acne spots all over my jaw line, cheeks and chin. They last for months and are leaving terrible dark spots all over my face! I am so embarrassed about it I don't leave the house!!! I have been to the
Dermatologist and I am on antibiotics and I started taking birth control pills to even out my hormones. I think they are helping but I was just curious to see if anyone else has had to deal with this issue? I am just feeling like I am at a new normal and then I am hit with this! It's kind of depressing!

Acne is very common during steroid use, but it sounds like the steroids were relatively ancient history when the acne started. If that's the case then I think we finally found something we can't blame on steroids. I don't think they can cause acne years after discontinuation. Of course now that I've written that Jan will probably find an article...

Good luck with the treatment! If you aren't taking probiotics this might be a good time to start.
Same thing as what Rocket described for me back in my 20s when I took Prednisone to control the UC. It was really bad for me but was resolved after I was put on a course of Accutane in the 1980s, this being the drug that has led to so much litigation and claims that it causes IBD and suicidal thoughts/ideation. It did not matter as I already had UC when I started taking it, and I did not commit suicide obviously.

I still get periodic breakouts, mainly on my throat and chest, but nothing like the huge cystic acne I had in my 20s when I was taking prednisone. I can even recall as a college student at UConn having to go to the infirmary and have a huge cyst on my face lanced. This pretty much all stopped after the 6 month course on Accutane. I am not even sure if Accutane is still on the market in the USA.

Befor all my surgeries I was on predisone and had about a month of acne as well. I was put back on pred after my takedown 4 months ago and sure enough the acne came back. Both cleared on its own after I got to a low dosage after tapering off. I'm at 10mg now and no side affects.

Try using Duac topical drying cream, ask your dermatologist or Dr. It worked pretty good for me.
Hey there,
So I had this same problem. The doctors put me on a bunch of prescribed medication-- none of it seemed to work. After searching, I discovered that the facial cleaner line "PCA Skin" worked wonders for me! It's a bit pricy, but definitely worth the results. You can order sample sizes first (which are less expensive). Hope this helps. Best of luck mate!
