Hi guys, my GI wants me to go on a maintenance dose of VSL#3 DS (and I'm pretty amenable to it as well -- I know it's of questionable value for chronic pouchitis but there are studies that show it delays the onset of first pouchitis post takedown). Anyway --

I've started taking 1/2 packet in water in the morning, usually after breakfast. I have noticed a definite increase in bloating/gas since starting, and no other noticeable changes good or bad. Should I stay at 1/2 packet until the gas and bloating calm down, and then maybe increase? How long would you wait to adapt before giving up? Is there anything else special I can do, e.g. taking at a different time, with food instead of water, etc? Any tips appreciated!

I felt the same when I first started taking it. It is a very strong probiotic and you are sending in the calvalry to take over. Your system needs to adjust to the good bacteria flow that is traveling throughout. Bloating and cramping and even increased bowel movements are completely normal starting out. Yes, I would increase you dosage slowly because some people actually get sick and throw up from higher doses too quick too soon. If you eat yogurt I've found the powder actually compliments the yogurt pretty well. I tried it with water at first and was not very pleasant. Anyway good luck it will take a little time to see results if any. Keep us updated.
