Howdy all - I'm here to help anyone I can - I've been through it all with J-pouch. Believe me IT ALL. I don't mean in terms of j-pouch problems but in terms of what I've gone through in life. Anyway - I hope I can help people

I'd like to share an experience with soiling myself at night. I did it for 2 years straight - every night - and I didn't have access to much in terms of medication or sympathy at the time - haha. Anyway - here's how I cured it. I started drinking a TON of water right before bed. My urge to BM with the J-Pouch wasn't strong enough to wake me up but when I had to pee, it would wake me up. Well, with drinking so much before bed - I would wake up 3-4 times a night to pee (sometimes more at first)- and could take care of my BM needs. It wasn't fun, but I eventually adapted and could fall right back asleep so it wasn't a problem. After a few months of that I stared cutting back on how much I drink and I would wake up less but the problem didn't return. A couple times I cut back way too much and I did have pooping accidents, but I would just add more water before bed. It was a very gradual process to stop slamming a bunch of water before bed but over about a year or two I did it. Now I don't drink anything out of the ordinary before bed and I don't have any accidents. This after literally having an accident every night for 2 years - so I know this process worked. If you're having problems - try it, it might work for you.

When I had my ileostomy I had to wake up once or twice a night to empty. I found that I slept much more soundly when I had set my alarm to wake me in the middle of the night. I seemed to be able to settle knowing I would be woken and when I returned to bed I fell right back to sleep again.
I have same issue, but have had some nights where I sleep all night and wake up un-soiled. Mostly what I eat and how late I eat have a lot to do with whether or not I experience leakage. I siggest metamucil or Immodium at bed time. Make sure to go to the bathroom right before goi g to sleep. A banana a day is also helpful, as it tends to be like a thickening agent. I cant imagine drinking so much water that I make sure I have to get up in the middle of the night. My goal is 6 to 7 hours of undisturbed sleep. Try not to eat after 8 at night. Just for peace of mind and a bit of a back up, I also started using panty liners. Good luck.
