At my appointment with Shen today, I brought up the kpouch/BCIR question to him. Apparently he is not a very big fan of the BCIR. Did not really have anything good to say about it.

Pouchomarx, I find it interesting, but not surprising, that your doctor is not a big supporter of the BCIR. Could you share with us some of the concerns he expressed to you about the procedure? I know that the BCIR is currently done by only 2 surgeons in the USA and is more complex than the K pouch that is much more readily available. Both procedures have a high documented rate of success and patient satisfaction. I would have kept my J pouch if it had not been compromised by high grade dysplasia in the anal canal. The last thing I wanted is to end up (pun not intended) with the bag and its associated issues. The BCIR has worked out very well for me and I feel that I made the right choice. Thanks Bill. With so much going on yesterday its hard for me to remember specifics. I do remember him saying that it takes up alot of small bowel and does not leave much behind in case you need some. sorry. I asked him if they made any new strides in formation of the kpouch and all he said was it was perfected. lol
Dr. Rehnke at Palms did my BCIR 2 1/2 years ago. It's the best decision I've ever made. Quality of life has increased a million percent and no issues with it so far.
Shen is my on and off GI when needed. He isn't a fan of it because he pushes for the Kpouch at CC. I also don't think he gets it. It is a part of him and his superior attitude that drove me nuts.
