Hello,

I haven't been here in a while but wanted to say hi and know if anyone else has tried the SCD (specific carbohydrate)diet? I had my colectomy 20 yrs ago after 8 years of UC. I had relatively no problems thru the years except an obstruction here and there. Then 3 yrs ago I had a major back surgery, lots of stress, pain meds, lng rehab. My whole GI seemed to change at that point in time with severe pain, gas, bloating, constipation etc. I have seen no less than 6 doctors about these IBS symptoms and have gotten several different diagnosises, many tests, meds and more confusion on what was going on. Finally I found this SCD diet online and started it 2 weeks ago and already notice results. I got the book called Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall which explains the diet do's and don't. You can google/youtbe it to learn more if interested. I highly recommend it. It all pertains to healing our intestines through diet. The author's story is quite remarkable too. The diet so far has been nothing short of micraculous for me. I couldn't be happier and wanted to share with you all.

I think she got a lot of stuff right in her diet but Paleo is, in my opinion, and the opinion of my doctor a better approach. Many people can't handle the dairy she allows. But if you've found something that helps you, that's awesome. As my doc says, dietary changes are just one of the things in his tool box he uses to treat his patients.
Paleo was definitely miraculous for me. After the birth of my daughter I had about 25 BM's a day and starting paleo, that dropped to about 8!
Paleo goes back to Hunter/Gatherer type of diet and you eat lean meats, fruits and veggies but nothing really processed, no dairy, gluten, or grains.
It has not cured my Crohn's but it has lessened my symptoms to a point where I can actually feel somewhat "normal." As you know with a J-pouch we go quite a bit but Paleo has slowed things down and thickened them up. I'm not promoting this at all as a cure but a tool you use to aid in managing the disease.

Check out the link below and you'll hear my doc discuss the benefits of this diet, hear my story, and in the Q&A you'll hear him compare it to the SCD. Once you follow this link you can find the rest of our videos by clicking on our name IBD TIE and it will show you everything we've posted. There is another set of videos about supplement usage that is quite good.

Also, if you want more information about alternative, and natural treatment options that you may not have heard of in the past, check out our facebook page. Dr. Brasco often writes notes and we post links about articles concerning things like anti-map therapy and fecal transplants.
