Hi everyone! I'm a long time j-poucher (14 years), however, new to this site. I've been on over the years, reading posts, but have never posted myself. I'm not sure if there are many other long time pouchers on here, but any advice anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I am currently experiencing rectal bleeding, bright red. It doesn't happen with every BM, but it does happen often. It used to happen years ago if I ran very long distances, say, over 5 miles, but I am no longer running. I do work out, however, the bleeding does not seem to be related to my activities. It just happens at different times and it's a pretty good amount. It may happen a couple times and then it will stop, but then comes back a couple of days later. No other symptoms.

Any ideas what could cause this bleeding? Thank you.

The first thing which comes to mind is hemmorroids.....internal or external. I didn't even know I had them until my colorectal surgeon told me. They can get irritated and bleed.....even without discomfort! So, my advice is to check it out with your surgeon or g.i. doc. It is okay to be scared....it is even better to find out what is really going on. I bet it is not a serious issue. Best wishes!
Things in that area bleed pretty easily. If you are experiencing no other symptoms then you can probably wait it out. I've had this happen a couple of times. I end up going to the doctor and usually by the time the doctor's appointment rolls around the bleeding stops. You could try that method - try to scare the blood away by making an appointment. If it doesn't scare easily then the doctor will be able to tell you what is going on.

i also am a long time poucher---nearly 14 years come to think of it. I just started getting that in the last few years myself. It is most likely hemmorroids. I woould still check with your GI to be sure there is nothing amiss with the cuff area. I do like Kathy's comment though of scaring it away with an appt. You never know though. It sounds like it's been a while since you have seen your dr.
Thanks everyone. I do have an appointment scheduled for next week. I have the same feeling though, it will stop now that I have actually made the appointment. This has been going on for months though, on and off, and it's a pretty significant amount when it does happen, not just streaks on the TP. I didn't know hemorrhoids could cause that much blood.

Thank you, again.
I've on several occasions had what seems like a rather large amount of bright red blood right after a BM as well. It's not entirely uncommon, but it's alarming when it does happen. Usually it happens once, and then hours later when I go again, there is nothing. Once it happened immediately after a run, other times I haven't been able to link it to anything. Hemorrhoids are one explanation (and they can be bigger than you might think!), but the pouch also has a lot of blood vessels as well close to the surface, which can be easily irritated. One thing to avoid is straining during a BM, which is bad in and of itself, but can also aggravate hemorrhoids or cause irritation of the blood vessels. However, it's good that you're getting it checked out. Hopefully it's nothing serious. Keep us posted.
