An old friend died very suddenly yesterday of sepsis. He was a completely healthy 60-year-old, active, fun-loving, committed volunteer, no health issues. Apparently he contracted some sort of small infection which morphed into sepsis before anyone realized what was going on. One day he was fine, the next in ICU with organ failure, the next day dead.

So sad, and a bit freaky considering that I'm constantly being warned about the risk of sepsis and reminded every time I see the doc or nurse to hit the ER at any sign of infection -- I know many of us are in the same place.

Just seems so unfair that it happened to him, you know what I mean?

I am so sorry Gin,
It is always hardest when it is sudden and unexpected...you have no time to prepare yourself.
The sepsis hits home because, like you said, we have so many reasons to catch stuff and are so jaded by our illness and experience that we tend to forget to look out for the signs.
Now is the time to be around people you loved and people who loved him...

Sorry to hear this. Yes, probably unfair, but all of us are just a heartbeat away from the same fate. Being healthy, strong, and a an active and good person does not protect us from sudden calamities. Sounds like your friend lived a good life.

I have been septic a couple of times, and consider myself lucky (since I am here to talk about it).

Another reason not to put off following your bliss. I have experienced and witnessed enough reminders that life is short (as I am sure most of us have) to be sure to live with no regrets and treat each day as a gift. If you wait for everything to be perfect, you'll miss so much.

Not one of us is sure what our future is.

I'm sorry for your loss and for the loss to his family. If something happened like that to me people would be surprised but it it happened to my strong healthy husband everyone would go into shock! Especially me.

Remember how long a year was when we were school kids? Those were the days we thought we'd live forever. Now years are speeding by-------------------
