There isn't much on the forum about mitigating the stench us K pouchers produce, and it's been a very annoying situation for me.   Here are two suggestions, thanks to the stoma nurse and some googling.

One can control the odor by  ingesting a FDA approved, OTC medication named Devrom.   It was created exactly for  IBD.  I think the best place to get it is on the Internet, as I couldn't find it at either a local drugstore  or a chain. There's quite a lot of information on the Devrom website.

Her other suggestion was to use an anti-PU product in the toilet,  before you evacuate. There are several products on the market, at least on the Internet, and one can make their own. Because I wanted to try it ASAP I bought essential oils of eucalyptus and peppermint, mixed about 20 to 30 drops with 1 teaspoon of rubbing alcohol ( to prevent separation) and 2 ounces of water.    Put about four drops in the toilet.  I can't say it's a perfect solution but it is a MAJOR improvement over the stench and certainly beats air freshener sprays.   Next time I get some essential oils I'll pick up lavender or lemon instead of the peppermint. But that's just personal preference. There are other recipes on the Internet and of course you can purchase ready made products.

Anybody else have experience with either product?  Once I get the devrom I will post whether I'm satisfied or not with it.

Wishing everybody a good and healthy new year, Janet

Funny, I never gave it a thought...not really.

I do know that if you put a couple of drops of peppermint oil onto the soles of your feet every day it works it way into your system and that puts pay to the smell (also makes your feet smell sweet!).

There is also the good, old-fashioned method of lighting a match in the washroom once you are done. The sulfur burns away the smell immediately.

Other solutions are lemon oil (you can make it yourself) or lemon-cinnamon potpourri...

Just dry your leftover lemons (after squeezing) in a very warm oven...then soak the skins in oil...or you can squeeze the skins into a bowl of oil...and save the oil...

Add some peppermint leaves into the mix and you have a kick-ass homemade oil to put pay to the smell.

so far, after four days on devrom i have had no relief.  started with three pills a day and am now at six.  will increase to the max, of eight.  but so far i haven't noticed any difference.  am sadly disappointed.

my fallback is putting 4-6 drops of essential oils into the toilet.  no longer concocting a solution, but rather going straight to industrial strength.  it's my best bet at this point.  certainly is cheaper than devrom.  and the lemon smell isn't completely out of place in a rest room.  it buys me some comfort level.

nurse thought that part of my problem is that i eat a lot of veggies.  jlh

Yes, smell is an issue for me too -- but I don't eat a lot of vegetables with my k pouch as it reacts poorly. I have not tried anything digestible for the smell, but I do use the Poo-Pourri spray marketed for regular people and it works pretty well. I got it for my husband after seeing their funny commercials, but of course he never uses it :-( Instead I started spraying it before "tubing" and it seems to help reduce the stench. They even make really small bottles that I can keep in my "to-go" bag in my purse for when I'm out. There are also different scents if one is more bothersome than another. Hope this helps!

thanks for the feedback.  i never got the spray, opting for a diy formula, then just putting some essential oils into the toilet.  pasted below is s diy recipe that looks similar to the poo pourri lemon scent.  my formula omits the  veg oil and according to this woman that helps spread a barrier across the water.  will try it and report back.

sorry to hear of a veggie problem with the k.  is it that they don't digest and clog up the catheter?  i do have that problem, but get around it by irrigating, and when necessary pulling it out, cleaning and re-inserting.  like my veggies too much so don't mine the extra work.  also, i cook them to mush or chew into a pulp.  janet

Thanks for the recipe Janet! I will refill the bottle I'm about to finish with my favorite essential oils, glycerin and water and see if I can make a better substitute.

Thanks for your etymology lesson, Sharon! Your post made me google "potpourri" and now I know it was just a pot of rotten flowers -- So funny the way some words get appropriated :-)

yes, love knowing the exact definition of a commonly used word.  indeed some people think certain potpourris do stink.

jen--will be curious to know whether your home brew works as good as the commercial.  mine only works if i also put in 10 +/- drops of essential oil.  the poo- pourri site offers a free--pay for s&h-- 2 oz spray.  will do a test once it arrives, but would like to hear your results.  thanks, janet
