How long do you stay on one antibiotic before moving onto a another? How long should it take to start seeing improvement (i.e. when do yo know it's time to switch)? My son's Dr had him on Cipro for 3 months. I know they tend to loose their effectiveness if you stay on one too long. I really don't think it was working and I think he just kept us on it because he was afraid things would get worse if we stopped. He has taken Flagyl (alone and combined with Cipro), Xifaxan and Tinidazole. Currently on Tinidazole for 10 days without improvement. How do you rotate and how long do you spend on each? Is there a certain order because some these are in the same class? Any advice is appreciated.
Rotating antibiotics only works among antibiotics that are effective for you (or your son in this case). If an antibiotic doesn’t work (for pouchitis) in about a week it’s probably time to *abandon* it (I wouldn’t call it “rotating,” though).
If you re lucky enough to find a few antibiotics that work, it’s best to rotate them every 2-3 weeks. In theory that would help prevent them from losing efficacy.
