Pouchitits? - Most Symptoms cleared up however still getting cold chills

Chills aren't typical of pouchitis. It's possible that you have a recurrent abscess. If I were in your situation I'd make an appointment to see the doctor. 

Thanks Scott, the chills are not as serve as they were back in January, however I'm waking up every morning feeling rotten. I don't have a fever however i do feel like something is lingering and after 6 days of Cipro that feeling still hasn't got any better, I'm also getting some tailbone discomfort and nighttime leakage which didn't occur a few weeks ago. What is normally the course of action for a recurrent abscess? They went in through my pouch and drained it via needle. I didn't realise this could happen as prior to takedown i had tests to make sure everything had healed.

I agree with Scott that you need follow up. They can do a CT scan or MRI to check for any recurring abscess or inflammation around the pouch. Maybe some blood tests, including blood cultures to be certain there isn't a systemic infection. Maybe you need a combination of antibiotics.

You don't want to wait for this to get out of control.

Thanks Jan, I must admit I'm a little puzzled as the chills are no where near as bad as they were back in January however something is defiantly lingering. Im hoping the nighttime incontinence dies off soon as thats my only 'pouch' symptom now after 6 days of Cipro. Sometimes is it needed for someone to try a different antibiotic?

Definitely! When you take only one antibiotic, there is the risk of resistant strains developing, or it may be that there were resistant strains from the get-go. 

A few years back I had some chills that would come and go over a period of weeks. Then I began feeling like I had the flu, with more frequent chills (but not consistent). I also had some pouchitis going on. I took my usual Flagyl and things seemed better, but not 100%. Then BAM! Full on violent shaking chills, low grade fevers that progressed to higher fevers. Within days I wound up in the ER with sepsis and a very low blood pressure. I wound up on 3 different IV antibiotics and an antiviral. They never really found out the culprit, but I was discharged in a couple of days. It was not the flu, as the PCR test was negative. I also had negative blood, urine, and sputum cultures. Weird...

Anyway, with your tailbone pain, it bears monitoring.

Hi Jan and Scott,

Thought id update you on what went on. So i finished my 10 day course of cipro 2 days ago which cleared up all my pouch symptoms, however i was still getting and awful chill down my back and feeling unwell ( no fever) while still taking it, only paracetamol kept this at bay. I seen my surgeon on tuesday who performed a rectal exam, he said i have very good muscle strength down there, the pouch felt great and could not feel the abscess which i occurred in January. I explained the chills etc and he was not alarmed and said i was doing great, and told me to remember I'm only 7 weeks out. I left kind of feeling a little disheartened as i was still puzzled into why i was getting the chills. However my surgeon is an amazing person, he is one of the best in the U.K and i have full trust in everything he says.

However after the days went on without taking Cipro the chills and unwell feeling have vanished and i feel great. My blood work came back normal also! Leading me to believe that i was experiencing a side effect of the Cipro, which i must admit was not very enjoyable. But the Cipro done its job, so I'm kind of unsure what to do next time (if ever) i get a bout of pouchitis again. Any thoughts? Ive never read on here of anyone experiencing chills whilst on Cipro!

Thanks for letting us know, Anthony, and I'm glad it cleared up on its own. Chills aren't one of the reported side-effects of Cipro, but strange things happen every day. It still might have been some residue of the abscess (a "last gasp"), but who knows?

Glad you are feeling better. I am also with Scott and would not assume your symptoms were due to Cipro, but more likely just residual symptoms of the resolving abscess, especially since you had chills before you took the Cipro. Of course, anything is possible. It just isn't likely.
