Just thought that I would share my experience over the last month. Preparing for a beach vacation, I chose to cut out all dessert type foods (cookies, ice cream, cake, etc.) to lose a couple pounds. Typically, I need to rotate my antibiotics every 2-3 weeks to keep my pouchitis under control. For the past 5 weeks, I've only been taking Pepto Bismol once a day and one Immodium right before bed and only having ~4-6 BMs a day with no urgency. Not that it's a surprise to anyone that cutting out the sugar helps decrease the bad bacteria since there is less to thrive on, but I had been hesitant to make a diet change since my meds were working. So I'm sure without the PB, which is essentially my antibiotic right now, I would be in trouble, but being able to be off the hard core antibiotics for so many weeks in a row is so nice!

PB is sort of like the miracle, cure-all for many symptoms. It has properties of an antibiotic, and for me, works better than most of them now. It relieves all of my pouchitis symptoms. If you were to substitute for an antibiotic, you can take two tablets in the morning and two tablets before bed to start. If you need a third dose in the middle of the day, you could take that too. I've never needed that much, but was advised I could take up to 6 a day. I would strongly advise against the chewables as they will make your tongue black (you can brush it away, but it's really annoying). Right now, I'm only taking once a day as it's all I need.

Give it a try and see how you do! You can also take it with your other antibiotics if you are finishing up a dose. It will just be an added boost. It might not work for you, but can't hurt to try.
