What are the symptoms for pouchitis with a K pouch? I have had my pouch for nine months with out any problems. For the past week, I have been having horrible pains in my pouch. I have been able to intubate as normal and I am having a normal amount of stool output. But recently I have the need to go more often and it is coupled with cramping that takes my breath away. Emptying the pouch makes the cramps better, but they do not go away completely. Wondering if it is pouchitis and how they go about diagnosing it with a K pouch. My diet has stayed the same and there have been no major changes in lifestyle. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rosie

I would suggest flushing out your pouch daily, through the catheter. I would take a probiotic and eat live culture yogurt.

Ibuprofen and NSAIDs can cause irritation to the pouch. Are you taking any new supplements or vitamins? Anything can irritate, if you are sensitive to it.

It could be pouchitis and it may not be. That's why I would start with preventative measures first. I know ibuprofen can cause major inflammation type problems. If your pouch is inflamed it will cause trouble.
Rosie,
If it is pouchitis they will probably have to put you on flagyl of another anti biotic like cipro but if it is bacterial overgrowth that won't really help a lot...try going onto a clear fluid diet, NO milk products at all, no sugars either and drink tons of fresh veggies juices, homemade broths and veggies soups and start taking probiotics immediately along with brewer's yeast and see if you start to improve in a couple of days.If you do then you can introduce grilled chicken breast and fish into your diet and some easy veggies like mashed potatoes with olive oil instead of butter.
This might help even if you do have pouchitis and ease up on the cramping too....
Do not forget to double up on your hydration if you are intubating more often because you are loosing a lot of mineral salts and keep those electrolytes up too.
Hugs
Sharon
