I had my pouch removed in 2003.  I bounced back from that surgery faster than any other one.  It was 2 weeks and I was walking a mile alone.  4 months post op I hiked 7 miles round trip to Ramona Falls at Mt Hood.  Provided you don't have any complications, 4-6 weeks should be a good starting point for recovery.

 

I have had 2 babies since the pouch was removed.  Again, unless you have specific risk factors or complications, you should be able to do anything with a perm ileo.  I have a friend who had his pouch out and he is a state trooper and plays full contact ice hockey.  The only limits are the ones we impose (again, provided there aren't other factors).

My anal wound healed in 2 weeks.  No problems at all.  

 

I believe I did as well as I did for two main reasons:

 

1.  The J-pouch was my problem.  My body hated it.  THe minute it came out my body bounced right back..

2. I did a very extensive, multi-faceted mind body approach to the final surgery.  I had a massage with Reiki treatment every week for 6 weeks leading up to surgery.  I used a guided meditation tape every day for 6 weeks before and wore headphones with the meditation in surgery.  I did everything I was in control of to do to help the process.  Just feeling like I was a part of the process instead of everything being done TO me was huge mentally.  

 

It's a scary decision for sure, but I knew I was ready when I was willing to accept any and all of the possible complications for the possibility of an improved quality of life.  Paid off in spades for me :-)

 

I had pouch excision and a permanent ileostomy in April 2014.  I was in really good health going into the surgery and very strong.  Even so, it's a major of major surgeries!  I was on pain killers (and not driving) for 4 weeks, pretty good at 6 weeks (abdominal wound finally healed then), and totally 100% recovered by 8 weeks.  Seems like 6 weeks is a fair goal for total recovery.

 

I felt that planning a longer recovery was best for me because then at 8 weeks I was up for everything (though I didn't hit the gym until 3 months lost op- just lots of walking daily before that).  I'm a stay at home mom and had to put my little boy in daycare for 8 weeks because I knew I couldn't care for him, but at 8 weeks, I was totally ready to be back into full swing.

 

And I feel awesome now!  I can do everything that I want to do.  I don't even really think about my ileostomy.  It's become just part of the routine.

Hi had removal sept 14 still fighting had heart attack three days after surgery belly wound abcessed have VAC on wound for anus sent home by ambulance two days ago really not ready too many new drugs on board nauseous can't look at food in pain for sure taking Tylenol #1 the worse is the reared wound pray that it heals. Also have pneamonia see family Dr. tomorrow re consult with internist. On a taper from pred. Believe it is the big problem.

Seen my F/D today she and pharmisist have me on a new med for the nausea hope it works as well lowered one of the heart meds as my BP was 92 on 50 I was very weak as well as neauseous she thought it was a problem as well.  Booked to see a cardiologist soon if the rear end would just work I would be happy.

Tomorrow I get released from my second hospital. Was admitted last Thursday in great deal of pain fever and nausea. Put on fluids and IV  antibiotics after a CT was done. A collection of fluid and junk so to speak in lower left an abscess in formation. My white count is now normal at 10 it was 28 when they released me from the hospital in Hfx they wanted the bed  I think. Also have the abdominal wound as a VAC as well as the rectal wound hope they heal soon down to 7.5 in pred for two weeks then 5. Long haul hope the end is in site. Just glad I do not have a young family or would never make it. Shawne

My good wishes for  fast healing from now on...so sorry that it has been such a rough ride...

Please don't foget to drink. I know you are tired, exhausted and washed out but dehydrations aggravates all of those symptoms plus pain meds make things worse.

What really helped me was keeping mugs full of ice water next to me and taking small sips constantly.

You needs salts too...try canned soups like tomato or chicken rice...

Soon the nightmare will be over but for now, a good laugh or cry with a great movie and a friend can help you to get through the night.
