Hi, I'm new to the site and have a handful of questions about the J-pouch takedown recovery. I had the first of my two surgeries on 6/4/2015 and three weeks after surgery I was back in the hospital to treat an infection from a suspected leak, but the leak could not be confirmed by CT or scopes bc it's too small (if it's even there). It's taken me about until now to start feeling like I can be a real person again. I'm about to start my 1L year of law school and I plan to have the second surgery over the winter holidays.

My questions about the takedown surgery: How long is the hospital stay after surgery? How many weeks should I plan to be house-ridden before I can go back to school? How long does it generally take for my energy levels to return to a manageable amount? Could waiting 6 months for the surgery, as opposed to the usual 2-3 months, help in my recovery time? I know that each patient has a different experience but I'm looking for general advice.

Thanks!

Hi,

I had my takedown surgery about 4 weeks ago. It was much easier than the previous two surgeries. I got home 3rd day after the surgery with very little pain and lots of BMs.

I believe the recovery time depends on your current health condition.

My suggestions are, have Calmoseptine ointment handy as there will be tremendous butt burn during initial days because of bile acid.

I am back to work after 3 weeks of surgery.

All the best!
