I've had a very very healthy pouch (only 2 very short bouts of Pouchitis cured with Cirpo and then VSL3) for 15 years.

Two weeks ago I had to have surgery to remove a 5" ovarian cyst, in the process I lost my right ovary and had to remove my fallopian tubes (hydrosalpinx from Ulcerative Colitis ramifications)

Since my surgery my pouch has been really really messed up.

The surgeons mentioned that my pouch was "fused" or attached to my Uterus with scar tissue and they detached them. Now I'm worried something functionally has changed.

I'm completely off of opiates, but I find going can be hard unless I'm getting a good amount of fruit/veggies/fiber in. Last night I had a big bowl of cereal before bed with some banana in it. And I was up 3 times in 4 hours of sleep with urges to go.

Anybody have any pelvic or other surgeries and notice that it took a while for your pouch to get back to normal?

I am praying that nothing got screwed up

God bless yall.

Hi POUCHYTX

Most surgeries are going to cause havoc with your body; two weeks is nothing in recover; so best not to worry; your fearing the worst but have no facts to hand.

You could try Psyllium Husks (are a soluble fibre derived from the seeds of Plantago ovata) in orange juice see if that helps improve things. Try a teaspoon then build gradually as required.

Hopefully things ill get back on track for you. I'm sending good vibes.

Update from my doctor on my pouch. Spoke to his nurse. She said that is very normal for it to take several weeks for the G.I. system to wake up and act normal from the anesthesia. She gave me some tips for food and a fiber supplement and some OTC (like Miralax) and drinking more water and feels that it will go back to 100% function very soon.

She also mentioned that they did numerous tests on my J pouch on its structure both with gas liquid etc. during the operation and it was perfectly healthy.

post op is Jan 2nd. If it’s not better by then - we will do an exam.

See I did say; high five; that's awesome news; rather then supplements i.e. tabs; try the natural product Psyllium Husks (are a soluble fibre derived from the seeds of Plantago ovata) in orange juice'. A small amount then a bit more.

Sending mega good vibes.

No I’ve actually lost weight since surgery. She says that’s from post op anorexia / nausea. And muscle loss.

Consult is in a week.

I tried some sugar free candy last night. That helped! But I don’t want to live on that stuff.

I wonder if It’s motility issues

It's good your seeing your consultant in a week; make notes to can take with you; try not to 'over think' your present issues, that will just cause stress. Stress doesn't help the healing process. Try to get as much sleep as possible, that's when the body carry's out repairs. I'd stick with eating 'light' but nutritional meals. Remember your body needs vitamins and minerals to heal. Yes candy is great now and then.

Saw my colorectal surgeon yesterday. He explained that it may take several months to find out what my new normal is.

In the meantime I’m getting good results with a small amount of sugar free candy per day and he suggested I stay with that but track it and slowly start to cut back to see if I’m not needing to use it over time.

Will be scheduling a scope in a few months as I haven’t had one in my entire 15 years of Jpouch.

Hi POUCHYTX

'May take several months to find out what my new normal is' that does sound sensible; surgery of any type will 'disrupt' the body; but even more because we have 'pouches'.

'In the meantime I’m getting good results with a small amount of sugar free candy per day', that's good, it's something that works for you. Yes keep an eye on the candy long term. It might be an idea to look at the ingredients, see if anything stands out, that's the ingredient that's helping. You might be able to get that in a different / better form.

'Will be scheduling a scope in a few months as I haven’t had one in my entire 15 years of Jpouch' that's amazing, We have them at least every 5 years. Although I've had 3 scopes in about 2 years. Way too many.
