Hi everyone,

I’m 27 years old and have had my j-pouch for 12 years now. I’ve had 2 complete bowel obstructions since my initial surgery that required emergency surgery. Luckily, I have been well since then (about 6 years ago) other than a few bouts of pouchitis.

The past few days I have felt like I am not fully emptying my bowels. I am going a few times a day but little bits with minimal gas. Additionally, I vomited last night, have no appetite and on and off cramping to my upper abdomen. I know I do not have a full blown obstruction from personal experience, however I am concerned this is a partial obstruction. I have never experienced this before. I am going to call my GI in the morning if I have no improvements. Any advice on what to do? Are there any interventions that help prevent this from turning into a complete obstruction? Does this usually resolve itself?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Drinking a carbonated/Fizzy drinks, especially Coke a Cola, is often suggested by paramedics to clear obstructions of the oesophagus; maybe it could also clear a blockage elsewhere.

Apparently, it’s the fizz which makes the difference.

I’ve never actually experienced a blockage but on the occasions a blockage was suspected; Doctors advised I keep drinking until it passes, although they never suggested fizzy drinks though.

Turns out my symptoms of nausea, stomach cramps and feeling unwell, was due to dehydration.

As you’re vomiting; wouldn’t that imply you may have blockage before the J pouch, in the area of the old stoma site.

Hi Loni

I use super enzymes by Now and nux vomica, a homeopathic med recommended to me by a homeopathic doctor. It has been helping me greatly as I have been obstructing a lot over the last 5 years.  In hospital multiple times a year for obstructions.  The super enzymes you just take as a capsule and the homeopathic med you can take one little tiny pill and put it in a bottled water and shake until dissolved and then take a teaspoon or as I do a couple of tablespoons.  If after 20 minutes that doesn't work then take a couple more tablespoons.  I hope you feel better soon.

It may be a partial blockage. I think symptoms vary depending on the person. I tend to get a blockage in the same area bc of a narrowing in that area, so it usually hurts in the same spot, and will hurt to press on my stomach.

If you call your doc, they might be able to triage you without having you go to the ER. For example, I put together a plan with my doc that if I feel symptoms of a blockage he can call in a cat scan and we can ID if it’s a blockage. Or if it’s critical I can go to the ER. Might be worth a call to the doc either way.

I would def hydrate though and stay on liquids u til you know if it’s a blockage. Eating food will just cause you to vomit or back up, and a NG tune (down into your stomach) to relieve the pressure is no fun.

I hope you find some relief soon.

Hi all,

Firstly, thank you kindly for your responses. With the hardship we all go through, it is comforting knowing a community exits that are not only willing to help and advise, but have personally experienced these situations themselves.

I spoke to my GI yesterday who basically said I most likely have a partial blockage and it will go one way or another. He said the only thing I can do is drink plenty of fluids and put myself on a liquid diet (which I did). He said if it worsens of course, to come to the hospital immediately.

I spent the night anxious and praying. Flashbacks to spending a month in the hospital from my last obstructions and needing two surgeries to resolves the blockages. Fascinating, that years later and you can still be brought back to that same haunting moment in time. This disease truly causes more than physical damage.

Anway, I went to the bathroom a little more and even passed some gas which I hadn’t been. I feel less nauseous and I am certainly not vomiting. I still feel a little backed up and have light abdominal cramping. My energy level is low but that is to be expected with my little consumption. I have to believe I am moving in the right direction. Is this too good to be true?

Thank you all again, from the bottom of my heart.

You are welcome I hope you never get any blockage again, I hope you do well and perfect! Always go when you have the urge to poop as well, holding it in can cause blockages too. I know a few people that got one by doing that, so always go when you have a urge. Sending lots of love and light to you and I hope everything is perfect for you <3
