i have heard of the pill cam being done for us FAP patients to look around beyond where an endoscope and sigmoidoscope can see.

i have not had a capsule pill endoscopy study. my dr mentioned it but i didnt hear anything about getting an insurance approval or denial for it.

that said, i do get yearly surviellence done. upper g,i (gastroscopies and flex sigs done) as told.  My pouch will be 14 years old on Oct 15th 2001.

I also have plenty of adenomatous polyps in the j-pouch itself.  Im hoping to get the OK to go on celebrex as this drug shrinks exiting polyps and prevents new ones from growing as long as you  are taking it.

i hope to get a yes or no answer on the celebrex following my upcomming scopes upcomming on Oct. 6th. 2015.

Good Luck.

My pouch is 23 years old. I Have the scopes yearly as well due to adenomatous polyps in it. I havent had any polyps in my stomach or duodenum. I think I am just getting paranoid about pillcam results. This blasted FAP has been a nightmare for my family. My dad was the only one out of four kids to get fap from his dad. My parents had three kids, and all three of us were diagnosed with fap in the same year, 1992. Then 15 years ago, my brother's 3 year old son died from hepatoblastoma. Then 5 years ago, two out of three of my sister's kids were diagnosed with fap. (Thankfully my kids are adopted). Then 17 months ago, my brother was diagnosed with stage IV duodenal cancer. Then 14 months ago my husband died from a sudden massive heart attack. Then 12 months ago my brother died, he had been living with us since his diagnosis so I could take care of him. I have numerous thyroid nodules that are being monitored by ultrasound every 6 months. And now here I sit waiting for the results of pillcam. Two weeks ago when I had the scopes done, I had a massive panic attack when the nurses told me that the doctor had taken tissue from both my stomach and pouch for biopsy. It took me awhile to calm down enough to realize that the biopsy from stomach was due to gastritis and not polyps. So now I am paranoid that the GI doc has bad news from pillcam. ugh. I cant do the Celebrex due to history of stomach ulcers and gastritis.

thanks for listening

A number of years ago, I was taking Celebrex for control of polyps, but discontinued it when a warning was issued about this medication causing heart problems when used for an extended period of time. It is my understanding that this medication will not prevent all polyp formation.  My doctor suggested aspirin as an alternative, but there is no consensus on effective dose or its effectiveness in preventing polyps.  I have been taking half a regular aspirin daily and it appears to have had some effect.  You should consult with your doctor before taking any medication to control polyps.  I have had several pill endoscopies and had no problem getting insurance to cover it.  For us FAP folks, upper and lower scope exams at least annually are necessary to catch problems early.
