Just wondering how long it took you guys to fully taper off of the pain meds where you had no pain. I had some tough times in the hospital where 2 surgeries turned into 3. 6-10 hours of surgies turned into 16 hours not to mention in between being treated for multiple infections with 3 different drains hanging out of me at one time. I've had massive body pain since then and still do now that I'm tapered to the 50mcg fentanyl patch from 100 then 75. Also from 10mg oxycodone to 7.5 which is only supposed to be for breakthrough pain yet I have pain all the time. I feel like if I tell him I'm still in a lot of pain when he wants to taper me off now that he will think I'm some junky. Any advise?

It is all very individual. But typically it should be only a few weeks at the most of major stuff after each surgery. Otherwise, you have something serious going on, or it has developed into a pain syndrome that has a life of its own, unrelated to the actual original cause of the pain.

It does not matter if your surgeon thinks you are a junky. He probably won't. But, at some point he is going to want you to see a pain management specialist because it becomes out of his league. They sort of create a monster when they have all these pain inducing things going on for a long time. It gets you hooked, like it or not, and coming off can be a tougher road than you'd imagine.

So, bottom line, tell him what is going on.
