Hi all,
I haven't been on this site for years as my J-pouch has mostly been fine. I had my 3 surgeries in 1997/98. I recently had a rib fracture from a massage (albeit a rough massage) and my Dr. is querying osteoporosis possibly due to malabsorption. I am going for a bone density test tomorrow. Does anyone know if calcium absorption is affected with a J pouch? Or any vitamins for that matter. Nothing was said to me at the time of my surgeries and I have always wondered.

Thanks?
Sherri

It is possible, but more likely that your history of UC and possible steroid use is the real causative factor. Plus, if osteoporosis runs in your family, you have that going for you. Osteopenia/osteoporosis is such a common condition in the general population, I doubt that not having a colon would be a major risk factor. Tons of ileostomates out there who seem to absorb calcium and other bone nutrients.
