I'd recommend a recent and thoughtful New Yorker article on autoimmune diseases. It's not available online for free, however, but your public library probably has this issue available.

I agree, I recommend the article highly.

A lot of people approached me after reading this article to apologize for not being more supportive when I was very sick with UC... I think it's interesting for us to read but REALLY enlightening for our friends and family members.
