She was doing so well. Started Humira and MTX for her arthritis and indeterminate colitis. Was due to get the next shot today, but...

Tuesday night she started getting SICK. Frowner

Fevers 100-102.5F pretty constantly. Using Tylenol, but avoiding the NSAIDS (which is partly why I can't get her temp down; she's never responded great to Tylenol, but now with IBD, we are avoiding NSAIDS). Wednesday morning, was flu and strep negative on rapid test, but strep cx pending.

Went back to peds today, and they feel she's got some wicked sinus things going on... And also her throat is super red... But there's TONS of mucus running down her throat. Frowner

Call in to GI again, but no answer yet, so I gave her the first dose of Omnicef.

Just sad for my girl her throat must be awful; she barely wants to swallow her own spit!

And of course, this halts her other treatment til God knows when.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about this! Seems like when it rains, it POURS!

When I had my "thing" in December, they wound up bombarding me with both a wide spectrum antibiotic and Tamiflu, hoping to hit anything and everything. Blood and urine cultures were negative, chest x-rays were negative, flu PCR was negative. So, they assumed it was just some random virus and sent me on my way once all was negative and I was on the mend.

Hopefully, this will be a quick run of something and she will be turning the corner soon.

Rachel - I had the EXACT same symptoms just a week ago. My PCP put me on doxycycline since it would hit anything bacterial except for strep, and my throat did not look "streppy" to him (I was also negative on cx). All symptoms gone in ~48 hours. No clue what it was. Doxy is relatively gentle on GI tract and not known to increase C. diff risk. Something to consider? Is her WBC up?

edit: Oh, just saw you are starting her on Omnicef. That sounds good -- I probably would have taken something like that but I am allergic. Hopefully she will have a quick turnaround too Smiler
Not too surprising, but definitely disappointing. I'm sure her resistance was in the crapper after the big IBD flare and now on immune modulators and anti-TNF biologic.

Antibiotics should square her away quickly. Fingers crossed it is not a resistant strain...

I had strep only once, the summer after 6th grade. It was the sickest I had ever been (until UC hit). She has my deepest sympthies!

Hi!

She is doing well!

We started the Omnicef on Friday, for the strep, and by that evening, she was fever free. She has two more days of the antibiotic. We saw GI and rheumatology on Monday, and they are pleased that she is in symptom remission. She had her Humira on Tuesday, but we have to wait to restart her methotrexate while on the Omnicef.

But yes, we're back to being ok. It never caused a flare, and she has stayed with once a day, formed stools, no belly pain, no arthritis pain. I pray we have a nice long run of this.

Hi Rachelraven, I'm so sorry to hear about your little one. My heart goes out to you and the brave little one.
It's one thing when we're sick, but when it touches our babies it's a double whammy!!

My daughter was diagnosed 2 years ago with crohns, she was seventeen at that time. Her first symptoms of inflammatory desease was her joint pain that started as early as about 9-10 months old.

I have a question, if I may? How old was she when her symptoms began, and was it the joints before her bowels, or the other way around?

How does she react to all of this? It has taken my girl a while to come to terms with the IBD, she dealt with the joint pain much easier.

I wish it was possible to take it away from her, n take it on for myself. I rather it be me in pain, then see her suffer!! Espessialy because we know so darn well how much it hurts!
wow just picked up on this thread ..i really feel for you as a mom and grandmother of three..when one of them are really sick i am besides myself..my grand daughter has an autoimmune disease called minimal change syndrome effects liver..when she is not doing well we are all not doing well..so glad to hear your daughter is much improved..hoping it continues..
