Medicine recommendation for Pouchitis?

I got a sigmoidoscopy a month ago and Dr determinedI have a small case of pouchitis. I have used Cipro in the past but it does little to help. My Dr wanted me to try CANASA but that was $1,000 with my insurance (No Thanks). She then prescribed CORTIFAM suppository and that helped clear it up but a month later I'm feeling cramps and in the bathroom 12-15 times a day. Plus, that med was $380.

Can anyone recommend a medicine to help alleviate pouchitis? I can then ask my Dr about putting me on it. Also, one that doesn't cost a fortune.

You did not mention that you've tried Flagyl (metronidazole). It is used for pouchitis as much as Cipro and is very inexpensive. If your doctor wants you on mesalamine (the drug in Canasa), ask about oral forms. Sulfasalazine is cheap. Lialda is definitely not. My son is on balasazide and it sells as a generic (at least on our plan it is).

If your main problem is your high deductible, then you may want to get a different plan at your next open enrollment. Your premiums will be higher, but at least your costs are spread out over the year. I know it can be a challenge. I met my deductible of $4800 by the middle of February, and my out-of-pocket maximum of $6500 by March. We just plan for it every year.
