Hello, I'm about a year post surgery now and I have to admitt to not putting much effort into eating well. After my takedown surgery and reconnect things went well and I pretty much went on a eating rampage. Fast forward, I've put on weight and do not feel well daily. I was hoping other member maybe cab share foods or even some sort of meal plan to help out. How often are other j pouchers eating daily? Feel free to ask me questions and thank you to all of you for your time.

I am a k poucher so the exit portion of our pouches is different but the meal part is similar.

I eat a lot of plain Greek yoghurt for quick meals and snack. It is both filling and pouch friendly...I add either salty nuts, honey or berries to it depending on how I feel.

Most of my meals are protein base (mainly chicken or fish with a few grilled meats weekly)...then I add steamed green veggies (artichokes, asperagus, broccoli etc) and for hubby a carb like potatoes or rice...You may need the carbs to keep things thicker. I add a salad (never use bagged salads...I find that for some strange reason the fibers are tougher and thus cause me problems...I buy fresh and wash & chop myself).

Cucumbers, tomatoes and avocados are all friendly (add some spring onion for taste plus tons of fresh herbs for flavour and vitamins).

Most sweet potatoes, orange coloured squashes etc like my pouch.

I avoid white breads and stick to whole grains for less gluey output.

Mix all of that into a meal plan and add your fruits into the mix at snack time or in the morning and you have an easy to live with meal plan.

P.S. Peanut butter is my frien-enmy...me and my pouch love it...my hips on the other hand have issues with it!

Hi Mike,

It's been 2 years since my put down and like you,  two months after my third surgery, I also experienced the great feeling of eating everything I love (including pizza, burgers, French fries, beans, etc., that I wasn't able to eat in about 3 years of a bad UC flare up). That wonderful "period of grace", last about six months.  After that I was hospitalized for esophagitis and an obstruction on my J Pouch caused by liquid iron supplements that almost killed me.  Since then, I developed lactose intolerance, but after a couple of months, I was able to eat pretty liberally again.  My problem is that I love to eat (thank God my dad's genes made me tall and I can put some extra pounds with no big deal.  

For the last year and most of 2016, I been dealing with a lot of Pouchitis episodes caused mainly by my excess on my eating habits.   Right now I'm recovering after an aggressive Pouchitis that didn't stop with antibiotics.  At this point I decided to eat with discipline and responsibility and noticed that reducing my carbs intake daily, is improving my health a lot.  I'm trying right now to eat smaller meals and snacks (5 times a day), incorporating more fruits (apples, papayas) and proteins on my diet (grilled chicken, lean pork) and a not more than two dairy products per day (lactose free).  I haven't introduce vegetables and green salads yet (which I love) I'm still recovering from an awful and aggressive case of Pouchitis, but that will be my next step.  I also recommend to drink as much fluids as you can, two liters is the minimum, the more, the better and I'm taking Beano enzymes (can find then in any pharmacy) to the ease your digestion. 

I think the key word is control.  Be aware of what we eat, instead of the idea of a special plan or diet that could work for me, but not necessarily for you. I downloaded an application on my iPad called Numbers, to keep track of what I eat to know exactly what is good or not for me.

Wow I wish I was able to eat all these foods you  described my doctors to me to stay away from everything you mentioned expect the peanut butter lol .... How long ago was your takedown?

Thank you very much for sharing. I will be able to come up with a few meals from your post. I appreciate it very much!! 

Dinner tonight:

Appetizers: grilled eggplant salad (just grill the halves skin-side up under the grill for 20mins, scoop out the soft 'meat', let the juice drain in a strainer, add crushed garlic and olive oil + salt...chop.

Entrée: Stuffed squab: stuffed with apple quarters & dried fruits (raisin, prunes, cranberries), quartered fennel root. Cover in tumeric and thyme, lemon juice & 1cup water. Bake in oven at 360 for about 1.5hrs...add baby potatoes or sweet potatoes if you want.

Dessert grilled fruits with brown sugar or maple syurp.

So that is a perfect meal for me...lots of veggies and fruits with a little extra on the side.
