Well hey Ya'll....

I haven't asked a question in ages! So I have been on Humira since '09 when I had my j-pouch disconnected and an end ileo installed...(for lack of a better term...lol). I am on weekly Humira injections for "maintenence" of suspected Crohns. The last time I was hospitalized for a obstruction, (which happens about twice a year) they said it wasn't necessarily something I ate wrong, but more likely it was the Crohns flaring and causing inflamation in my remaining intestinal tract which causes an obstruction.

So my question is...should I really be having obstructions that require hospitalization twice a year when I'm on that high of a dose of Humira??? I makes me wonder if the Humira is really working or not...I mean how many obstructions would I be having if I weren't on the Humira??? And how long can I be on this kind of dose...? Thanks all...hope you're doing great!

Cataja,

I am not really sure which area of the ileum is getting inflamed so as to cause these twice yearly obstructions, but my recent MRI Enterography discovered a segmental thickening and narrowing of my ileum just above the J Pouch - suspected, but unproven Crohn's. I was warned flat out that if it got worse, and narrowed further, I would be prone to blockages and possibly twisted bowel, which killed Maurice Gibb. So I am on Entocort with the the hope that we can bring down the inflammation.

In your case, it might be helpful to have an MRI Enterography, if you have not already had one done, to isolate the area(s) where the problem exists that is causing the blockages - is it near the stoma? Repeat scans will then enable them to tell whether the Humira is bringing down the inflammation. This is essentially the same principle that is being used with me, repeat scans to monitor the progression of this problem area where I have segmental thickening just above the pouch in the ileum.
