I take Lomotil at bedtime, because that's when I get the most benefit from slowing my gut. I also take it before getting on a boat for a multi-hour excursion. It works better for me than Imodium. I don't have an external ileostomy, so the best timing is likely to be different under those circumstances.

All Lomotil (and generics) are the same dose of two medications, so it's best described as "one tab" or "two tabs."

I had my surgery almost  14 years ago, and never had to take anything other than Imodium !!!! But then last fall I something happened. I was so sick, lost control even during the daytime! It was like all the fluids from stomach were leaking out of my bum and burning my skin. I could barely walk at the end of each day the pain was so bad!

Went to the hospital , saw my surgeon, he diagnosed it as pouchitis. He gave me all the drugs fight the pouchitis and lomotil for the pain . 2 weeks later I was back at the hospital still in pain that could be rated 9out of 10. He gives me more lomotil. 120 this time enough for a month. I return in late February, tell him I'm still in a lot of pain , level now is from 5-7. Takes another look up there says everything looks amazing and healthly!!!! I say why am I still in so much pain still in this is pouchitis. His response is we may have misdiagnosed you , we blame a lot on pouchitis... So they continue with the lomotil.

over then 10 months I take that crap( lomotil). In constant pain , tired, and feeling like a zombie. To me, lomotil, help at for but it was masking my problem.

My problem was i didn't know how to get rid of the butt burn, I was experiencing. TILL ON THIS WEB SITE, SOMEONE TALKED ABOUT PSYILLIUM,!!!

The day I started taking PSYILLIUM was the day I stopped taking  lomotil. And I've felt 90% better. As we all know 100% is unachievable.

I got my life back and starting to be active and enjoying my life again.

Thank  goodness for PSYILLIUM

Many folks see improvement when they use some form of soluble fiber, which will thicken and bulk up stool. Psyllium (usually Metamucil or Konsyl) is common, as are Benefiber and Citrucel. A personal dose has to be worked out through experimentation, and some folks have gotten into trouble by overdoing it. Some surgeons advise to use it with half the amount of water recommended on the label, though I disagree with that advice. And some folks feel worse instead of better when they take soluble fiber.

I've used Metamucil every day since I got home from my surgery, except for occasionally checking if I still needed it. I now mix it with Konsyl to get less sugar from it. I find it very helpful.
