i have had my loop ileostomy since Feb, and ever since I have had a perfectly very light red ring around the stoma. It has never gotten any worse, and it never itches or hurts. I have tried 3 different barrier rings and still there. My pouched are convex and i wear a belt. I thought maybe it was from the pressure, but when i have it off for roughly 15 minutes to shower it doesnt lighten up or change. I saw a stoma nurse at Cleveland Clinic and she said to try pouching without using a barrier ring to see if that helps, which it did not. She also brought up "caput medusa",. Said typically due to liver issue and to ask Dr.Shen about it. I'm confused cuz every picture on the internet looks nothing like what i have. Its either a bluish or purple colored ring around stoma or big bulging looking veins. I recently had bloodwork done due to my kidney growth, but all bloodwork was normal... Anyone ???

I think sometimes people in the healthcare industry take uneducated guesses to try and show their value. It's obviously not what the nurse is suggesting if it looks nothing like the images you've looked up. I don't have an answer for you of what it could be but I've learned from experience not to freak out with everything you think is abnormal unless it is causing you pain or some side effects from being present. Just trying to give you a piece of mind after going through so much stuff just try not to stress it or overthink it because it could be something just temporary or maybe just your skins reaction to certain things. We are all different. Like I said I would get to concerned unless it starts causing you pain or other issues. You probably want to ask another nurse or Dr that is not just gonna try and take a guess and then send you off on the wrong path researching something that isn't even close to relevant to your situation. Good Luck.
Poucho, I had a constant red ring around my stoma with my loop ileo - it lasted the whole seven months with it. Sometimes it would get fire engine red and sting a little, probably from my eating red sauce or something, but it was usually at least pink. The eakin ring wasn't quite flush against my skin with my loop. Despite my attempts to level out my skin with product (forget the name, but it was like clay that I could mold and shape and fill in the spaces), I guess the waste was still touching my skin, causing the ring. Could this be the case with you? I ask this because you mentioned a loop ileo.

I had the same thing when I had my loop ileostomy for three months. Once I had my take down the scar was a big circle which has now, almost five months later disapated into an actual line. I think it is probably just irritated from that fact that a piece of your insides is sticking outside. If it is not causing you discomfort I wouldn't worry about it. If it were from leaking you would definitely feel burning/biting pain. Your body has been through a lot.
