Just found out I have some evidence of dysplasia from last colonoscopy and my gi is recommending removal of colon. After reading up on this frankly it's been a scary read. Would anyone be able to answer the following for me:
Can someone please tell me what is life like with a j pouch?
How long after procedure did most of you return to work?
How long is recovery?
I am a person that loved being out doors going for walks and playing golf and doing little travel. Am I going to be able to maintain that with the J?
When the j pouch is matured are you able to hold your bms or control them ?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I had a j pouch for 30 years.  While frequency (10-14 times a day) and butt burn were complications of the pouch, I felt it was preferable to having the bag.  Many j pouchers do not experience these problems to the extent I did.  I was able to do most of the activities I enjoy, including alpine skiing (Vail, Beaver Creek, Lake Tahoe, etc.), equestrian competions, four trips to Eastern Europe, camping, hiking, and have a good social life.  Although I had occasional “accidents”, I was able to hold my bm’s most of the time until I found a restroom.   I suggest you have a consultation with a CR surgeon who has done many j pouch procedures.  Best of luck!
