I hope I can encourage others who will find hope in good news about J-Pouch Surgery.  I have been a forum member for over five years -- since learning that I had colon cancer.  It's been a tough five years with about six different surgeries that included three different ileostomies to correct issues.

I was pretty close to resigning and settling into my ileostomic future and happy I had that option!  However, I had the opportunity to have Dr. Remzi from Cleveland Clinic do a pouch redo surgery six months ago.

The only word that comes to mind regarding my health now is "normal."  And by that, I mean 100% normal in almost every way.   While I plan for about three or four BMs a day in my schedule, I now sleep through most nights and not sure how I could be any happier (except I could stand to not have such a voracious appetite and subsequent weight gain! )  I am now at 190 LBs (165 was my low during my issues.)  And it goes without saying, "normal" means I need to work hard watching what I eat and exercising.

I am playing basketball fairly competitively in an over 35 league.  I did zip-lining at a corporate event a few weeks ago, and no bathroom access for about six hours with no problem!  (Just two Imodium before breakfast and two more during the day.)

There are many people like me who have had success, and I am very thankful for all you members and this board who were with me when it was tough going.  Remember, posters are the ones who have issues and need help .. but there are many who graduate a bit back into life with a successful J-Pouch!

I know James is at Cleveland Clinic for his redo today with Dr. Remzi.  I hope he has similar and even better success.   We had a similar history of issues, so best wishes, James!

One thing I learned, technically, from my episodes:  Any leak is not good, and there is no such thing as "a small leak" IMHO.  Also, if you are passing gas from where you should be, that's a great sign!

Congratulations.

Good to hear the dang things work for some and can go on with a life that is normal.

I know people that don't have problems don't come here.  No need to.  But I wonder if a survey of its success and failures has ever been done in detail.

I know.... I hear 80 percent are good.  That's what I hear.

But that was years ago before I got mine.

Just curious on the rates.

Again... Congrats... You sound like your in a good place and that's the place to be!

Richard.

Thanks for sharing, I am home from my second take down, I had my original pouch done August of 2013, take down Feb 2014 and it decided to twist and turn on me so created a bowel obstruction and the Pouch had to be redone.  Dr. Wexner and his team at Cleveland did it Sep 2015 on Tuesday - a week ago I had my second take down, I am home with only 8 BM's and sleeping through the night which is a whole new concept for me.  Now, the questions are:  I have little to no appetite and feel sick when I eat, how do I address this? I have pain like cramps pretty much all the time even taking pain meds prescribed by doctor, I don't know if my pouch is really empty when I go to the bathroom and seems not to be, is that normal? Please share and advice any way you can. Thanks Patricia

I am so glad things are going good! My pouch is 3 months old and is doing fantastic! I feel like I have my life back. I didn't realize how my UC impacted my life until I got the pouch. I'm so happy that I live in an era where this surgery is possible. I don't think I could live with an ostomy bag for life, I loathed it! I can only imagine what the future will bring for those who have gone thru what we've all gone thru, the medical advancements will be amazing! I am very, very pleased with my results and am one happy poucher! Congrats to you Knklhead!!!!! Nora 😎

Nora.. It so good to hear from some people these darn things work for.  Pleased to hear you are doing so well in such a short period.  Mine never worked.  I have an ileo.  You may know that.  But I am happy with it.  If the pouch would have worked this good.... I would be a happy camper.  And I am now.  I went the long way around.. Lol.

No regrets.

Richard.

Hey guys. I can't recommend Dr Remzi enough. I had so many issues with my original pouch since it was done in 2008. I did have my redo done at Cleveland Clinic on March 7th like AKA Knuklehead stated. So 10 days later and I'm doing pretty well. Only issue is gas pains. I only trust myself to release on the toilet right now. I am going to bathroom every 4-5 hours right now and not cuz urgency but because the gas. I feel pretty good and going back to work Monday after 2 weeks. My butt was raw after 5 days in hospital but have used portable bidet the past 5 days and it's gotten better.after my pouch redo in October I was having a lot of mucous leakage and I was very worried once connected I would leak stool. About a few days after surgery I haven't experienced any leaking.  If anyone is having issues with their pouch, especially mechanical issues, and you are told it's a failure, I highly recommend for you to get a second or third opinion with Dr Remzi first.

It's always good to be reminded of the success stories!

My husband has a very successful jpouch for 10 years.  He had 1 blockage 3yrs post take down, due to scar tissue.  But now, he eats whatever he wants (except for gassy/spicy foods).  He never had pouchitis or any incontinence/leakage.  He has about 6 BMs per day and 1 BM at night.  His only complaint is the occasional butt burn.

My 15 yr old son just had step 2 of 3 and is doing well.  His take down should be in June.  We pray his pouch is as successful as his dad's.
