Hello all,

I had my takedown surgery 3 weeks ago and things have started improving.

I wanted to ask for suggestions on how to maintain a healthy GI now. Mainly I am looking for information like how to avoid possible hernia/blockages/Pouchitis or any other possible problems that others have faced.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Maxx

Maxx, others may have elaborate instructions for you, but I'd suggest living your life to the fullest. If all goes well your J-pouch may be nearly invisible to you. The only things I did in the beginning were zinc oxide to prevent butt burn, Metamucil to keep the consistency manageable, and Lomotil if I was going to be away from a bathroom for an extended period. That worked just fine for me for about eight wonderful years, and I wouldn't change a thing.

Hi Maxx...I had no problems with my j pouch for 20 years.  (just passed 26 years in April)/  I tried to stay away from as much sugar as possible and learned to recognize my body telling me when I didn't behave with eating habits, stress, and not getting enough fluid!!!! Don't allow yourself to get de=hydrated.  Watch pain medications too.  Not all are bad, but there are a few that you need to be careful of.  A good probiotic and probiotic rich foods are important (at least for me they are).  Best of Health to you!!!

I had jpouch takedown nearly 5 months ago. I would say its important to chew food properly, eat slowly. to prevent a hernia I wore a hernia belt for the first few months whilst working out as a precaution. build up strength in the gym slowly at first. I am now at full capacity.

another thing I find helps me, and I think I read on here it helps others too, is to drink a coffee or two a day.

I find it helps flush out my pouch and fingers crossed will reduce chances of getting sibo or pouchitis.

I don't do anything special. I try to eat right (but of course I don't always!) and exercise daily. I do eat a yogurt day. Other than that....nothing. And my j pouch has been very good to me. Knock wood it's been five years and so far I've never had pouchitis.

PS- it took almost five years before I slept thru the night without getting up to go so that may come in time for you.
