Doug, I have had my jpouch for over 25 years now due to fap. My first 6 months was rough going. The problem I had was not being able to evacuate unless I had a huge cramp. Even then it still wouldnt empty and I'd sit in the bathroom waiting for another 20 min. After 6 months I stopped taking stool thickeners and lomotil and found it much easier to stay loose and just push it out.

I liked the ease of having the illeostomy for 3 months but after raw skin around the stoma and bag accidents I'm glad I got the pouch.

Good luck with everthing!

Hi Doug,

Really glad to see you are getting the hydration. Lifesaving, plus you just feel sooo much better. Looks as though you are leaning towards giving that Jpouch a try. And it’s a good idea. Allows you another option and the majority of people are quite happy. If not, make a change.

I see others have told you it take 6-12 months to be all healed, and they are correct. Each week gets better.  You went through a lot to have that made, so give it a go, the odds are with you!
A lot of people out hear will be thinking of you and sending good thoughts and prayers and ready to listen to you.

Reach out when you need to and keep us informed. We all have your back!

Same with me!!! Stay loose and push it out without any meds!

I have the JPouch built, and I will use it, and I hope over time is absorbs water and I will be okay.  I am trying to stay positive- and I am grateful for all of your support.  Without you all - I would be so depressed. My entire family thanks you for keeping me together.

Doug

You and your family are welcome Doug The J-pouch will be fine, trust me. When I got rid of my ileostomy, I felt 100X better: mentally and physically,  literally

Hi Guys - I can’t catch a break - after 5 great days with the PICC I got a life threatening blood clot in my arm and my entire arm turned purple.  I got admitted to the hospital and heparin IV saved my arm.  The clot is 14 inches long so I need to see if I will need surgery or not in an few days.  The clot runs up into my neck.  I feel better now, the arm was 10 out of 10 pain.  PICCs usually work great, so as to not scare anyone - it’s 1/100 risk and they tell me I will ultimately be fine.  Totally separately- while in the hospital they bulked me up on Metamucil, and interestingly my output got so thick some stool would actually go through into my unhooked JPouch.  Just a little, and only a few times.  Essentially I would pass some liquid stool out of my anus. Is that possible?

Unfortunately dehydration and not moving around can cause blood clots sadly. I am glad you are okay now though.

And yeah its possible to pass stool from your anus. I did that in my ostomy days as well and so has other people. If the stool fills up in the bag all the way to the top, some can go back into the stoma and go to the rectum. That is totally normal, do not worry

My loop ileo was horrid as well. My skin became so inflamed that the appliance would not stick. I was sure the scars would never go away, but they did. I took about a year to feel normal again, but had been very sick and had 34 surgeries in 8 months. The big thing though is that I would do it all over again if I had to. It was worth it.
