I started taking metformin recently and it makes my diarrhea so much worse. It's pure water and I have accidents at night. Is it possible that the diarrhea will subside completely over time? I'm reading that it is possible, at least in folks with a normal anatomy but I'm not seeing any concrete evidence there either.

I'd like to see some statistics on whether the GI side effects will clear up over time.

Anyone have any information here? I could also switch to berberine if that might work better.

Hi, Slouchy. I was on Metformin to lower my blood sugar and I had the same problems as you. It was not working at all, and I felt I was losing my nutrition and becoming dehydrated. After. Few months, my endocrinologist switched me to a second level diabetes drug called Januvia. I say second level because Metformin is usually the tried-and-true drug when introducing diabetics to glucose controlling drugs for the very first time. Januvia is not as strong as Metformin, but it has not caused me any problems at all.
