Ever since I got ulcerative colitis, I have been anemic.  Ive have had jpouch for like 6 years. Because im anemic, my doctor wants to do iv iron to get my levels up. Im a 9.8 now.....doesn't seem too bad so im undecided if I want to do it.  I hate taking any meds as I seem to have a bad reaction to some. I took bactrim a year ago and got hives So anyone here don't iv iron? Low risk? Pretty easy?

My iron level was also low, so my GP has me taking one Ferrous Sulfate 325mg tablet daily with vitamin C to improve absorption.  This dosage got my iron and Ferritin levels into the normal range without needing an IV infusion.  You may want to consider one IV infusion to get your iron level up quickly and then maintain it with the tablets.  My lab says that the normal range for iron is 35-390.  If that scale is used by your lab, then your iron level is significantly lower than normal.  With a j pouch, it is also very important to monitor your vitamin B-12 level.

A few days after my first iron infusion of injectafer, I could finally stay awake all day long! After my second infusion a week later, I got a rash that lasted a few days - a reaction to the carbohydrate in the solution they said. Only needed the 2 infusions and I'm feeling so much better. Was even able to cut back on my thyroid medicine because now the blood cells could actually carry the hormones to my cells! Worth a try I'd say. Debbie
