Had a quick concern as I've been dealing with something for the past week or so.

Is it possible to have inflammation in the J-Pouch without having pouchitis? I'm usually fine all day, only going to the washroom once or twice at work. But when I get home most nights I find myself using the washroom more, maybe 2-4 times before bed, then typically once throughout the night. Accompanied with involuntary straining and burning most times after work.

I'm taking Lomotil, usually 6 a day. When I remember Metamucil daily & have just recently started taking VSL#3.

Is diet maybe something I should look into, been eating a lot of fast food to try and gain weight... I know it's unhealthy fatty foods, I'm going to look into high calorie bars or boost supplemental drink.

Any advice or tips is greatly appreciated.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Yes you should stay away from fast food. Fried or greasy food is not good for us j-pouchers. I find it very difficult to gain weight also. I try very hard but there's only so much food my system can handle. Try eating small amounts of healthy food every few hours. It took me a long time for my system to get used to eating differently. I am one of those rear cases that found it very difficult to eat after the surgery. But I know that foods effect everyone differently. Also I find that wine also does not agree with me but also everything you put in your mouth is trial and error. Make sure you chew your food well. I can tell you that It does get better as time goes on. So be patient. Stay healthy Grace
Have you actually ruled out pouchitis? "Pouchitis" just means "inflammation of the pouch," so the simple anwer to the question is "no." OTOH, lots of us have other digestive issues in addition to a J-pouch (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, etc.). If you do some careful experimentation you might find some foods you don't tolerate. While I won't cheer for fried foods (except when i'm eating them), most J-pouchers can digest greasy food as well as the coloned (which isn't perfect, either).
