I'm 15 years out and doing very well with my J-pouch, thankfully. (I had high grade dysplasia/UC) I take 4-5 immodium-once a day AM- some times twice.

What is the "normal' suggested dose for j-pouches? Since this was a verbal suggestion from my surgeon, with no written prescription, I can't quite remember what dose I should be taking.

I probably go about 5-6 times a day and my lifestyle allows this without a problem- never urgent. However, two things cause me to post here for further research. 1. Lately, I've been leaking more at nighttime. and 2. I'll be traveling in Europe for 21 days in mid- july so I am thinking perhaps it would be best to investigate how the immodium and Diet may play a part in controlling my need to go as well as leaking at night.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. thankyou.

Before my J pouch creation, I had an illeostomy and colostomy bag for many years and my Surgeon and Consultant recommended no more than 6 Imodium per day, which I took 2 in the morning and 2 before bed and if I expected to be out longer than normal, I take 2 more, otherwise I only took 4 in total.

Since my J pouch surgery, my Surgeon has suggested I take no more than 3 Imodium throught out the day, allowing myself to decide as to whether I need it or not.

As it happens, I don't think I actually need it, although there's a noticable difference to output consistency when I take it.

I tend to visit the bathroom 3 or 4 times per day, sometimes 5, although, it varies from day. no night time visits but I do endure leakage during the day.

Imodium thickens the output and when I had the colostomy bag it slowed my output down, so less frequent bathroom visits.

I believe it also assist with hydration, due to the slowing of the output, more fluids are absorbed into the body, I guess from the small intestine, J pouch or remainder of the bowel with an end illeostomy.
