Ileo output vs. J-pouch output

Hello,

I am new here, but have been lurking for a bit. Some of you many know me from another forum too. I had my Step 1 surgery in Nov. 2011. I am scheduled to have my next surgery in Jan 2013. I haven't decided if it will be the next step of the j-pouch or whether I will make it a permanent end-ileo.

I am concerned about the potential complications, the recovery and the length of time it takes for things to normalize with the pouch if I go for the jpouch.

Currently, my output is fairly consistent. It is usually thick,and I have learned what things I can tolerate and and things to avoid. I can empty about 5 times per day (rarely at night) but usually just empty more often just when I urinate so I don't have to think about it.

My question is: Is it reasonable to assume if I get the jpouch, that my output will eventually become similar to what I have now? It took about 2-3 months for my ileo to improve and it continues to be great. Will the jpouch take the same amount of time?

That's a hard question to answer. During my last flex pouch scope the doctor told me my pouch was well constructed and a good size. He said when I was over my cuffitis I should only have to go 4-5 times a day.

It depends on your anatomy and the skill of your surgeon along with what you eat. I'm still having problems and my take down was almost 29 months ago.

Other's are fine and go right back to work after a normal recovery time.

In my case I had a very uncooperative ileo. It ran like a faucet all day and night. It was a loop ileo so that's why. I was worried that the same would happen after takedown but it was total opposite. The output was much slower.

Expect to be going to the bathroom a lot immediately after takedown while your body adjusts to its new plumbing. I was going about 10-12x a day right after takedown. Then in a couple of weeks it slowed to 8x then a couple of more weeks I was down to 4-6x a day and that's where I still am 2 years later. Of course everyone is different but within a couple of months you should be at a desirable frequency. Good luck either way with the j pouch or the permanent ileostomy. Smiler
