As my luck would have it, Murphys's Law has struck again. I was supposed to have my Hydrogen Test tomorrow, Nov 13 to see if I have Bacteral Overgrowth.

Well, the doctor's office just called me telling me that their machine is broke and it will have to be reschduled at a later date.

This sucks and is really frustrating because for the most part, I am afraid to eat and with Thanksgiviving right around the corner??????

I started the FODMAP Diet this past Saturday and am also trying to stay on a Gluten Free Diet and have felt better. But with the holiday coming, and I am supposed to go into Manhattan on Saturday with my brother, his wife and a dear friend of mine, to have fun, eat well, drink a lot, now I have to do what?

I need some fun and to just unwind, esp with the year I am having.

Thaks for letting me vent.

Sorry its getting delayed! This happens to you a lot. Greg had this same test done over the summer because he was having some issues. He had it done in Hillsborough by a GI group there. I provided the link for you. Maybe you can call and they can get you in. If I remember he didn't wait long for an appt. Just so you know the test is like 2 hours long.

We were in the city the other day. Go and have fun. I did fine. Had to use the bathroom a couple of times that day but in NY you have your pick!
If you are doing a true FODMAP diet you don't also do a gluten free diet. As part of FODMAP elimination is eliminating wheat (gluten). Look for the book by Patsy Catsos. That is the best way to follow FODMAP

With FODMAP you can definitely eat out, you just need to order special sometimes. For example instead of chicken with some weird sauce on it, you can eat plain chicken and rice. Salad - just use oil and vinegar as restuarant dressings will inherently have garlic salt, inulin, fructosy stuff, or onion powder in them. I am on FODMAP (and have been for about 6months) and I eat a lot of "entree" salads when I eat out. So steak on a salad. Also fish, baked potatoe, lots of veggies - but you have to pick the fodmap friendly ones. Burgers, cheese - just don't eat the bun. Lots of places in my area - not so trendy Pittsburgh - now even have gluten free options. So you can generally get gluten free bread or gluten free pasta. Most other gluten free restaurant things ARE NOT fodmap friendly, such as pasta sauces, etc. Because they will have garlic, inulin, etc.. in them. So beware of that.

Let me know if you need anymore FODMAP eating out ideas.

Also most docs don't bother with breath test for bacterial overgrowth. They just go by symptoms. prescribe a course of antibiotics and if it helps.. then they know its sibo.
Thanks Liz,

I noticed when I printed the FODMAP Diet, not everything is on that diet I can eat. I cannot tolerate fresh veggies like lettuce, or fresh fruit except watermellon and some grapes. Bananas bother me becasue I feel really full and bloated.

For now, I have eliminated pasta, onions, garlic, tomatoe sauce and so forth. This is not an easy thing for an Italian like me to do.

I have bought gluten free bread and try to do my best with gluten free products. Gluten free pasta I did not care for. Even when I cooked it as instructed, the noodles were too tough.

Thank you for the suggestion on the book. I will check that out.

Every time I eat pasta lately I have trouble. It's a good thing I really don't like it. What kind of Italian am I? Lol. I don't know what's going on lately but I have found that it was easier for me to tolerate foods in the beginning after take down than it is now three years later. Strange! I want to hear how you made out with dr. Ciambotti
Hi Marianne,

Whoops. Had the wrong date. I see Dr Ciambotti this Thursday evening. I am going to request a Hydrogen Test from him too.

I love Pasta but the Gluten Free Pasta taste like cardboard. Its still too hard for me to eat it even after following directions.

That's pretty funny. What kind of an Italian are you? I feel the same way about me. I love Italian Food. Now I can't eat Stuffed Shells (haven't for over 20 years).

I am not sure what to make of it that now, three years later, you are having trouble. Perhaps its due to our bodies changing all the time.

Good Morning Marianne,

I saw Dr Gary Ciambotti yesterday evening. Seems like a real nice man. Told him all my symptoms and told him how I am doing my best to stick to a Gluten Free Diet.

He thinks that because even Pasta gives me pain, he asked if I had a blood test for Celiac Disease. Not sure if the doctor in Flemington had me do that blood test but if not, he gave me a script.

At least I am beginning to see some hope. Not eating pasta anymore, especially for an Italin, a full blooded Italian like me is tough.

He has scheduled me for the Hydrogen Test on Wednesday, Nov 27, the day before Thanksgiving.

The only negative about doing the test this day is that is when I am in the Parish Center working all day for the poor. Last year I made 9 turkeys from start (cleaning the bird), to finish. I really enjoy doing this. I told the coordinator I will be there around 1:00ish.

Jan,

Oh shoot (actually, I would have said something else, not shoot but S##T). Doing something like that puts me in danger of pain. I am afraid to eat that stuff now. But I understand what you are saying.

I hope the blood test I took about 2 weeks ago looked for Celiac Disease.

I have felt better in the last 7 days straight than I have for the past 6 months.

Thanks for the update. Did he seem knowledgable about j pouches? I'm thinking of switching to him since my GI is in Philly. Would be a heck of a lot easier.

Glad you are feeling better. Hope you get some answers soon. My hematologist ruled out celiac for me being that I'm chronically enemic, he said that's a symptom. Never knew that. Is your hemaglobin in the normal range?
Hi Marianne,

I only chatted with him about 5 minutes so I do not feel comfortable about how knowledgable he is about J-Pouches and have you switch doctors from the one in Philly. I suppose you could look up comments from others who have reviewed him, which I have not done. But Hillsbourgh is a lot closer.

But I had to make the switch from who I was seeing. I normally saw Dr. Daniel Sadler who is located in Bridgwater but actually has a 2nd location in the same building as Dr. Giambotti, but in a different office, but he does not do these kinds of test. Dr. Sadler is a very nice, quiet man. I really liked him. But I had to have someone who was going to provide me with more.

I don't know about Hemaglobin. It seems like I should have more knowledge to ask such questions. I guess I am too trusting.

Have a great weekend.

Rock
