My life changed from perfect health to almost death in just a few weeks. It all started one day at work. I work as a Service worker for corrections. One day at work I got a very bad case of the cramps, it got bad so I went home, thinking it was the flu. It got so bad that night I went to the Hotpital. The Doctor in Emerge told me that I may have a bowel infection. This is after I told him that. I was bleeding every time I went to the washroom. He then sent me home with a perscription, and told me to take them for ten days, and things should improve. I did what he said. Well things got worse, so after eight days of pure hell,I went back. The Doctor was the same one as before. I told him things have got very bad since my last visit. He said he was sorry, and admitted me right away. This is where the hell started. After a blood test that did'nt show much, just a change in my blood count, they had no idea what I had. They took an Xray and said, that my colon was inflamed, but still had no idea what was wrong. I was now going to the washroom from 30 to 50 times a day. I thought I had Cancer, and was going to die. The Doctors would not give me a scope, because my colon was to infected. They took my blood 3 times a day trying to find the problem, but nothing. After a week or so other Doctors got involved, including the guy from one of the labs, he thought I had some fourm of C Deff. At this point all my joints started to swell up. My feet got so big i could it scared the hell out me. After 2 weeks still nothing. My family Doctor who was now getting frustrated at what was happening. One day the nurses were trying to put a tube down my throat, because I had notthing to eat in about 3 weeks. They tried 2 times and could not get it down, on the third try my Family Doctor walked in and started yelling for them to get that fucking thing out his mouth, and said that this man had sufferd enough, and stormed out the door. A couple of hours later in walked my Doctor, with another Doctor who was here looking at Hospitals in Prince Edward Island, plannig to move, he is from New York. This Doctor took one look at at my X ray and said that I needed surgery as soon as possible. Well the next day he did it himself. When they came to get me the next day,I thought I was going to die, but for some reason I was at peace with that. When i woke, looked down, and there it was a bag attached to my belly. Well after another week or so in the Hospital,I slowly began to recover. When I got home I had lost about 60 pounds, and looked like an 80 year old man. After about 4 months , I returned to work, and put all the pounds back on. Another year passed, and I started to research the J pouch opption. I decided to go for the J pouch. After 2 more surgeries I got to sit on the toilet once again. I could not believe how much I missed it. I have had the J pouch four about 16 months now . It takes some time learn what to eat and not to eat, for me sugar was the worst If anyone has any sugestions please let me know. My wife and I went to see the Doctor who had performed the operation. My wife point blank asked him if he had not performed the operation on that day, would I have made it. To my shock ,he said, when he performed the operation my colon had already perferated, and that I would not have lasted fo long.  like to thank my family Doctor  A. k. from P.E.I. and Doctor M. from  New York, for saving my life.  I was 50 years old when this happend. They sent my colon to a Lab ,and a few months later, found out that it was U.C.      P.S please forgive the spelling

It's a good thing your doctor took charge!  I went years without a diagnosis but wasn't having much bleeding.  My PCP looked inside my rectum with the instrument they use to open women up to do pap smears.  He saw what he thought was lesions and sent me to a C/R Surgeon.  The surgeon was an a$$.  He didn't examine me and gave me a lecture about how I was not seeing blood as the redness was because I'd eaten tomatoes.  When I tried to explain it happen often and I didn't eat foods containing tomatoes all the time, he said that he'd had nurses thinking the same thing and they were wrong too.  As he was leaving the room he said to make an appointment if I needed to see him again. This was around 7 years before my diagnosis. Why would I go back to him?

Some people get UC so fast they are in the hospital and having their colon's removed quickly.  Some of us never need their colon's removed.  Some of us linger taking obnoxious poisons into our bodies all to get into recovery or calm down our symptoms but end getting the surgeries.

I am still shocked by the medical professionals that don't know anything about colon removals and very little about IBD.  The last time I saw my OB she was looking for my stoma.  She looked like a deer in headlights when I explained my j-pouch.  She probably doesn't care about it but I fired her. I fired my neurologist too.  They don't know it as I just cancel appointments and never go to see them again.

That's why they call it "Practicing" medicine.
